End of Year Review

My first year at the Ohio State University is coming to an end. It is a strange ending, but I really appreciated the time that I had in Columbus. In my classrooms, I learned about chemistry, vampires, theatre, English, and the Environment. The most meaningful thing that a professor has done was cancel all of the assignments and focus on writing about COVID19. My English professor taught me that real life matters over writing an academics. I also really cherished the ENR scholar lectures. Especially the ones about getting ready for a career. I know that I can trust Brett to help me with any cover letter and resume I have to write, which is a huge deal being a college student. Outside of the classroom I learned  how to be independent. I was already a pretty independent person, but being in college has enhanced this feature about me. I had to learn how to time manage school work, when to eat, and socialize. I enjoyed creating my own plan and schedule. Throughout the year I became extremely social. I was pretty quiet at the start of the year, and spent most of my time studying. During the second semester, I really talked to so many people. In a negative way, whenever I went a night not hanging out with my friends, I felt alone. I never expected wanting to join a sorority, but I am really glad that I went through the process, and now I have another group of friends that I love.

I have many favorite memories throughout the year. The Hocking Hills trip was really special to me. It has been so long since I went camping, and the trip reminded me why I used to love it so much. My friends and I are planning to go camping together whenever it is responsibly safe to go. During the trip, I played the game Werewolf for so many hours. It was amazing to meet second years, and get closer to the first years. My birthday was also very special to me. My boyfriend surprised me and drove to Columbus. I got a piercing and we went on a really nice walk. At night, all my friends came over and we played Clue. My last favorite memory that I am going to share is Gamma Phi’s mother’s weekend. My mom came up to Columbus and we hung out all weekend. The highlight from the weekend was our visit to the Candle Lab. We got to pick out our favorite scents and put them into a candle. It was a really fun activity that I would love to do again soon. What I am looking forward to the most next year is my boyfriend being on campus. I can not wait to show him around, eat together, and study together. Some other stuff that I am looking forward to is continuing to work at Oxley’s, getting to know my sorority sisters, and of course, hanging out with my bestest friends in our new dorm.

Enneagram test

I got type four, the individualist. The positive traits of a four are creative, personal, and self-aware. Some negative traits are self-conscious, sensitive, moody, and withholding. After reading the description of a four, I generally believe that I fit into the type. I especially agree with the basic fear (having no identity or personal significance) and the basic desire (to find themselves and their significance (to create an identity)). I strongly disagree with the statement that “fours maintain their identity by seeing themselves as fundamentally different from others. Fours feel that they are unlike other human beings, and consequently, that no one can understand them or love them adequately.” This could not be farther than how I view myself. I believe that everyone is unique and fundamentally different, and I am not a special case. One last thing that I really relate to is the goal of “taking an artistic, romantic orientation to life, creating a beautiful, aesthetic environment to cultivate and prolong personal feelings. Heighten reality through fantasy, passionate feelings, and the imagination.”

Most of the points on improving self-development were about getting out of my imagination and into the real world. I do not agree with this advice. I feel as if my imagination does not hinder me from completing real tasks. Sometimes, my imagination even helps me come up with creative solutions to my real-life conflicts. The advice that I do agree with is that my fluctuating feelings impact my current perspective. It is difficult for me to grasp the truth of a situation because my emotions control what I perceive as the truth. My time at Ohio State can maximize my growth by practicing being aware of my emotion’s impact on my perception.

Pizza and Coffee

For the second half of the semester, I visited two local establishments. The first one I went to was Kafe Kerouac on High Street. Kafe Kerouac is a bar and coffee house. It is filled with albums, board games, books, and art. The cafe was very busy and cramped, but I had a great experience. I went there on a Sunday morning with my boyfriend. All of the drinks are named after artists. I ordered an Ernest Hemingway, which was a house special with almond syrup. While we were waiting in line, my boyfriend and I browsed the countless books. We sat outside and drank our coffee while I googled more about the location. I learned that they hold poetry and comedy nights. My boyfriend and I agreed that we should go to a comedy night when our schedules are less busy. I would definitely go back for a show, and the coffee was great too.

The other place I went to was a pizza joint called Porto Fino’s Pizza. I went with a group of friends and we ordered a thirty-inch pizza. Sadly, we were not able to finish the pizza ourselves; so afterward, we offered pizza to random people on our walk back. The pizza was really good and the company was great. I would definitely go again, but this time with more people so we can finish the pizza.

This semester I went to four locations in Columbus. My favorite moment was Porto Fino’s Pizza. This is because I was able to try something new and fun with my new friends. It brought us closer together. I learned that Columbus is not as big as I originally thought it was. Once I started learning street names, I can now navigate my way around the city and understand where things are relative to each other. There are still so many things that I want to explore. I really want to go to the North Market. That is really high on my list. I also want to do a gallery hop, and go to COSI. I plan to go to these places next semester when I have more free time. For someone that is new to Columbus, I would recommend to just walk around High Street. Walking around the city is a great way to explore it and find hidden locations. There is so much artwork and small gems that can be found.
