The categories of G.O.A.L.S. are the driving factors behind every honors student’s academic experience at Ohio State. Being globally aware, having a curious mind, fulfilling oneself academically, developing leadership skills, and performing service are all very important for any student. This is why these factors are the guiding principles behind my academic career.
My spanish course has helped increase my global awareness by continuing to learn a new language and by teaching me about different hispanic cultures and traditions. Additionally, I have participated in TalkAbroad, which is an online interactive activity where I talked to a native spanish speaker for one half hour, which developed my speaking and communication skills.
I could participate in original inquiry by performing research at Ohio State. I could also create a thesis that analyzes my major. My major deals with solving new problems on a consistent basis, so I am regularly creating new techniques for solving difficult problems in the real world. In general, being curious about the world function around you is important because it leads to a fulfilling academic experience.
Everything about being an honors student at Ohio State is about enriching oneself academically. As an honors student, I will take more rigorous courses that challenge my mind. I will be involved in higher level classes that are more discussion-based, which will make me develop my skills as an analyst. This will in turn introduce me to the concept of speaking in front of others and sharing my ideas, which is also a part of the Leadership concept of the G.O.A.L.S. mission. A big part of leadership is being able to collaborate with others. This includes sharing your own ideas while also taking the suggestions of others and molding them into a plan. To be a good leader, you have to listen to the ideas of your peers as well. You can’t rely solely on yourself.
As an honors student, I will also perform service projects for the community. It is important to give some of your time to others that are less fortunate than you. Everyone needs help at some point and it is rewarding to lend a helping hand.
Being an honors student at Ohio State is difficult, but there are many resources to help me in my journey. By finding my place in the honors community and by keeping the G.OA.L.S. mission as my leading principles, I am confident I will find success.
