Web-enhanced Listening Strategies

The most important thing I learned from module 5 is the different types of note taking. I was very interested in the video where frank talks about his top five choices for note taking. He included Cornell method, Mind Map method, flow method, and writing on the slides. I am the kid in class that writes down everything. My notes are broke down into topics but are not very organized. I feel like any one of these methods would be very helpful for me. Last week I made a bubbly chart which is similar to the mind map method. I found it very easy to break my topic up into smaller sections. I do not think that the map is beneficial during the actual note taking process. I feel it is best used after note taking. It is a good way to review your notes and compile similar topics together. I personally use the outline method and that is my go to method. I feel it keeps my topics separate and it is the fastest method for me when I am taking notes in class. In the future I would like to try the Cornell method. It seems very helpful and gives you something to think about after you’re done taking notes. I can write out some questions on the cue side while I’m taking my notes. When I am done with the class I will take some time out to summarize everything I learned during the class. The advice I would give future students is do not write out every word the professor says. It will tire you out and half way through the class you will not want to take anymore notes. Listen for important words and the tone of the professor. Try many different methods until you find what is right for you. Once you get into the routine of note taking it will get easier over time.
