PSL 2nd Year Advocacy-Emma

This poster will give insight on why I believe the United States should decriminalize drugs. Decriminalizing is not the same as legalization, but it does take away serving time and gives opportunities for fines, treatment, and community service. With the legalization of marijuana and the progress that states are seeing, I think that it would be worth giving it a try to decriminalize all drugs. I have supported my claim by referencing Portugal and the progress caused by decriminalizing drugs in 2001.
The statistics show that decriminalizing drugs that the rates of overdosing and HIV infection, along with other diseases has decreased significantly. Making this movement could help save lives and help society. Having people be able to contribute to society instead of sitting behind bars does benefit the community. This will allow people to receive treatment instead of having to financially burden themselves with a hefty fine. The decriminalization of drugs can benefit the United States.

Question of the month-October

Lately, there has been a lot of hyperpartisanship on social media. There are people from both parties who post a lot of inaccurate news. With social media it is very hard to know what is accurate and factual. One way to know if a post is viable is by doing the research after seeing the post. You can find the answers and the facts through research. That can tedious, so there has to be other ways that we can figure out if posts are factual or not. I also think that you have to observe who is putting out the news. If you look at what that person has posted before and find that they are truthful in their posts then you can consider it to be trustworthy. If you find a person who has a past of being false in their posts then you could consider them an untrustworthy source. We also have to look at who we are hiring as personal representatives of the parties. It is the parties’ job to make sure that facts are being put out for the people. That means we need to be evaluating who we are putting into these positions in both parties.

About Me

M name is Emma Ferris. I am from Marion, Ohio and I am currently a criminology major. I went to Pleasant Local Schools where I have been very involved in academics, athletics, and music. I have been involved in dance, singing, and 4-H outside of school. My mom graduated with a degree in business and my dad works as an engineer at Honda. Family and friends play a core part of my life. I have two brothers, one who passed away when I was thirteen. In college I would like to pursue my education towards my desired career path. I would also liked to get involved in different extra curriculars than I have previously been in. I have always been a hard worker and very driven academically and I would like to continue to be that way in college. My Advanced Government class got me really interested in court cases. This is actually what reaffirmed my desire to go to law school after my undergraduate degree. I would like to get more involved in politics and learn more about our government. I believe at Ohio State I have a great opportunity to do research that will help me gain more knowledge on the government, politics, and other areas that will enrich my academic experience. My academic goals may take time but in the end it will help me get to where I need to be. It drives to succeed and put in the effort that is needed. I would like to be a lawyer. Ever since I could say the word lawyer and understand the job description I have wanted to pursue that career. I do like to argue and have been told that I am very good. Besides that I do feel passionate about representing a cause and fighting for what I believe is right. I worked for a catering business in high school that taught me a lot about hard work. I was on my feet for many hours and learned about the importance of the physical labor required into work. It also taught me social skills by interacting with different types of people that I would encounter in work. I want to change the world in someway or another. I want to make a difference for people. I believe that I will be a great lawyer who is going to represent good people or a good company. I think that by helping people who deserve the help will allow me to make an impact. I am very passionate about helping kids. I was involved in 4-H for many years. I was a camp counselor for the organization. I think that I belong in environment that wants to help kids and people who are struggling. In my community being a camp counselor was a great responsibility and leadership position. For five days it was my job to make sure that kids were having a fun, educational, and safe time. I am also passionate about people who are fighting a battle with cancer. Cancer runs deep in my family. My mom has won the battle to cancer twice and is my hero. I would like to find a way to help people who are fighting the battle. In Columbus I attend to be apart of orginizations and events that help that cause. I hope that I bring OSU a student that is bringing positive change.
