Vision Statement & Statement of Action

Because a hospital can be where significant events can occur, such as the beginning of life and death itself, I hope to be a physician were I can persevere through complex practices to ensure that patients and coworkers can experience a sense of security and belonging despite the highs and lows of their life experiences.

In order to achieve this vision, I am pursuing a biomedical engineering major with a Pre-Med Track. By potentially getting a teaching assistant position, I will also hopefully hone my leadership qualities and communication skills to help students. If possible, I hope to partake in an internship or Co-Op position in order to gain professional experience in the medical devices field. The next step may be to apply to medical school, but life always has a different plan!

Urban Air Panel

On September 6th, some Biological Sciences Scholar students and I attended a panel of researchers who discussed the environmental, social, and economic impact of pollution of the air via motor vehicles, factories, and other pollutant-causing systems. What really appealed to me was the correlation of social injustice to race, in regards to the opportunities are available in neighbors with high toxin levels in the air. Therefore, environmental sociologists are attempting to bring awareness to this predicament by educating lower-income middle-school students about way to minimize waste in their daily lives. Conversely, environmental economists are negotiating with powerful industries about minimizing their pollution, as well.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness:
    • Global Awareness is greatly concerned with honing one’s perspective. In order to best adapt to daily changes and to interact with others, one must overcome a front or his or her “comfort zone.” He or she must experience the culture and even struggles of those affected by racial, socioeconomic, or emotional discrimination. One year, my friends and I attended a service trip to Camden, New Jersey, where we immersed ourselves in poverty. We had a strict budget to heed to along with various menial occupations. Although this was only a week, I was able to gain insight about the limiting opportunities the Camden residents had. For example, many of the residents were illiterate and had to depend on other extraneous ways of carrying out their lives.
  • Original Inquiry:
    • Original inquiry is derived from an authentic curiosity. After that stage, this inquiry can develop or be cultivated through research or daily observation.
  • Academic Enrichment:
    • In order to best incur intelligence and maturity, one must not only enroll in difficult classes, but classes that can test one’s limit. By challenging oneself, he or she can become more adaptive to various pressing situations. Furthermore, success can only be achieved through prior failure. By accepting past failures, one can better prepare himself or herself to further achieve success.
  • Leadership Development:
    • By applying for leadership roles in various activities such as clubs or student government, students can hone their interpersonal skills. Furthermore, one’s wholeheartedness, drive for justice, and community mindedness can spur inspiration, ambition, and commitment. Couple of years ago, I organized a fundraiser with a local restaurant to support the Daughter Project, which provides therapeutic care for victims of human trafficking. By interacting with leaders of the city, I had to consider ways of behaving more professional.
  • Service Engagement:
    • Authentically giving back to society to best support the common good is imperative as it can help not only stakeholders, but also with self-growth.
