Student Research Opportunity Program (SROP) Awardee

dekia      De’Kia Dortch is a junior in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from  the Pennsylvania State University. She hopes to gain experience in medical- surgical, critical care, and emergency specialties as a registered nurse. After obtaining her license as a registered nurse, De’Kia plans to pursue a PhD in  nursing. She is interested in cardiovascular research with a focus on health  disparities. She would like to explore interventions to promote prevention of  heart disease and improved outcomes in African Americans. De’Kia also serves  as the Vice President for the Archousai Chapter of Mortar Board National  College Senior Honor Society where she is gaining experience with nursing scholarship, leadership, and service.  De’Kia is excited about joining  team @drfennessy as an SROP awardee in the Center for Excellence in Clinical  and Complex Care during summer 2015.

Theresa Schmidt is a third year undergraduate at The Ohio State University majoring in Microbiology. She has a passion for healthcare research and is especially interested in the areas of infectious disease, regenerative medicine, and epigenetics. Theresa’s career goal is to be a Nurse Scientist. She hopes to explore the field of nursing research by translating her prior laboratory experiences to clinical environments. She will be doing some exciting work with Dr. Fennessy during summer 2014-2015! Update-Theresa was accepted to the University of Texas-Austin College of Nursing into the masters entry program for adult health NP. We will miss Theresa’s bright smile and she will still be involved with upcoming abstracts and publications from databases she helped to develop during her time with team @drfennessy.

Gini Marshall is a long time colleague and has been an important part of the team for well over 10 years. She has worked in acute care centers in Charleston, SC. Gini was part of team @drfennessy during the pre-PhD days. Gini was instrumental in helping to launch Dr. Fennessy’s career prior to starting the doctoral program. She is an important member of this team and we are lucky to have her on-board. Gini is also a loving mother, grandmother, and wife. Informatics Liaison

A.A.SchultzAlissa Shultz has a Master’s degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. She served as a Human Performance/Change Management Consultant in the private sector for a global management consulting firm.  Life experiences led to educational pursuits with the goal of becoming a registered nurse and a chance to leverage her consulting experience within the health care arena.  Alissa is passionate about quality, interdisciplinary care, particularly in respect to informatics, new technologies, and innovation.  She is currently in the Grad Entry program within the Health Systems Management track, Graduate Research Associate for the College of Medicine/Department of Biomedical Informatics; Clinical Educator for Epic at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, recipient of the student scholarship award for the local HIMSS chapter, student member of AMIA, and member of Sigma Theta Tau. She will be working with Team @drfennessy as we take the next steps to implement big data technologies.

OSU Student Advisee- CON

victoriaVictoria Reisinger is a third year undergraduate at The Ohio State University majoring in Nursing and minoring in Psychology. She is also a part of the Honors Program at the College of Nursing with Dr. Fennessy as her mentor. She has a passion for health promotion with a special interest in using pathophysiological evidence to promote the importance of healthy behaviors. Victoria’s career goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner and hopes to use her passion for physiology and education to advocate for optimal patient health.

Her work was recently submitted to the 20th Annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum Submission entitled, “Cross-sectional analysis of metabolic syndrome variables relative to cardiovascular health in the United States (1999-2000 and 2011-2012)”. Victoria’s work is a great example of nursing scholarship originating from our OSU Nursing Honors Program. Congrats Victoria on your submission during your SOPHMORE year!

Digital & Open Science Strategist- Melissa Kay Ayers

Melissa earned her Master of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida. In addition, Melissa will complete her Master of Sport Business Management in August of this year. She also attended Louisiana State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing with a minor in Communication Studies. Melissa holds five years of industry experience where she has assisted implementing: Marketing plans, production of company campaigns, redesigning and rebranding of company websites, in order to create exposure for brands through social platforms. She believes social marketing gives the opportunity to impact and inspire markets, through using the platform of engagement, active participation, and interaction. She is also a regular volunteer for community youth programs. We are thrilled to have her expertise on Team @drfennessy! We encourage you to reach out to Melissa for digital strategy consults.

Physician Consulting Liaison-  John Lee, MD

Dr. Lee completed his medical training at Chicago Medical School in 2014 and is currently working with the team @drfennessy on clinical reviews, publications, and study related activities. He completed his BS in Biology at University of California, Berkeley in 2009. John is now completing his residency training and is interested in internal medicine, clinical research, and consulting. He is originally from Sacramento, California and currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.
