Teens Retreat

Every spring break, my youth group from St. Louis has a youth retreat. I attended as a student, and when I came to college, I became a counselor. I would lead worship, help set up, and have one-on-ones (discipling) a few girls.

KidSmiles Volunteering

On Saturday, November 10, I volunteered At KidSMILES from 8am-10am. I packed bags with brushes, toothpaste, floss, etc. for an hour and then I hung out with the patients in the waiting room for the last hour. I got to play dental games and read books to the kids to get them excited and less scared for their dental appointment.

Total hours: 2

Dental School Interview Volunteering

On September 30, I volunteered with Dental School Interviews for the College of Dentistry of OSU. I helped candidates sign in, and then escorted them to their interview rooms. I also helped clean up the interview rooms afterwards, and put the papers/graded rubrics to folders for the Admissions Office to look at in the future. This was also a very cool event, as I got to experience a real dental school interview and the process. I also got to talk to prospective candidates and got to hear from the student panel more about school. This was 7am-2pm.

Total hours: 7 hours

The Bridge

Sophomore year, I started volunteering at The Bridge through the church H20. Every Monday, we would help tutor refugees with English and math skills. I was placed to help tutor 1st graders with this other teacher. Each volunteering session lasts from 6-9pm (3 hours)

Volunteering

On January 4, 2017, I volunteered at Habitat for Humanity: Restore in St. Louis. I worked for four hours (10am-2pm) at this warehouse near my house. This was a store sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and it sold used house parts for the public. All proceeds would go towards Habitat for Humanity. I helped bring in donations that people dropped off and organized/cleaned the warehouse.

High School Job

In February of my Junior year until August of summer 2016, I worked at Simply Math & Reading as a grader. Simply Math & Reading is very similar to Kumon, in which students come and either get tutored in math or reading. As a grader, I would sit and grade all the students’ weekly homework. I did this every Wednesday and Saturday for 4 hours each.

This was a fairly relaxed job compared to being a waitress, working in a store, etc., but it was also hard. Having this job taught me a lot on how to manage my time, social life, and work. Sometimes I wasn’t able to go to an event because I had to prioritize work. I learned some time management skills from my small job experience.
