Module 7: Motivation

The tomato timer is something I learned about from this weeks module and I highly encourage other students tp use this resource. The tomato time has three categories; 25 minute work section, short break which is 5 minutes, and a long break which is 10 minutes. This resource gives students the ability to track their time. This is important because it is so easy to get distracted during your “breaks”. Next thing you know, the 5 minutes turns to 10 minutes and so on. The nice thing is that when your break is over, a sound goes off or a notification pops up to notify you. There are settings to choose what your personal preference is. This is a nice feature because you can work on many different tabs.

This app has been very successful for me and made my time for work more manageable. It is an easy resource to use. The breaks are huge for me because I used to do all of my assignments consecutively and without any breaks. This made my work not the best because my motivation towards the end decreased. I used the tomato timer for a few assignments this past week and it helped me stay on task and not get burnt out while doing my school work. I plan on using this tool a lot during the spring semester since it is my busiest semester. I also have a lot of online classes so this will help me stay on task and not get distracted while being on my computer for those classes.

Module 6: Boolean Logic

I had never heard of this term “Boolean Logic” prior to this module. Something so small such as using the word “or” to join terms and find similarities/relevance’s and also using the word “and” for combining different concepts. Quotes & Brackets are just as important, the brackets are what holds the words/phrases together so they can search in unison. The quotations around the word is notifying that is separate and on its own while searching. This logic is basically broken down into a mathematical equation to simplify one’s search. I never knew searching different concepts could become so sophisticated, however; I think this logic is brilliant and not complicated. To dumb it down best as I can…

ANDs help narrow results

Quotation results contain all terms as a phrase

OR have one or more term present

At the end of the day the Boolean logic is a recipe to help generate more precise results when it comes to searching or researching for any type of project/classwork. I honestly can say I have never used this strategy to search but, with that being said, I believe I am going to start implementing this logic when it comes to me and searching things. I feel it is a beneficial and efficient way to search and helps get things done in a timely fashion.

Module 5: Web Enhanced Listening & Viewing Strategies

The video I chose to focus on for this blog post was about the iPad Pro. I personally take my notes the old fashioned way; pen and paper. I am not opposed to typing my notes but I find it more beneficial for me to hand write my notes. I feel like I retain information better that way. I have heard great things about taking notes on an iPad since there is the ability to write on the screen as if you were writing on paper. That is a big reason why I found this video interesting. I would love to try and take my notes on an iPad since I would be able to still physically write my notes, it would just be on a screen rather than paper. I know that most of the world is moving forward in technology. Before we know it, schools will have iPad’s for all students and writing on paper will be unheard of.

I would advise people to try using an iPad! I wish I had the opportunity to do so. I think it would be similar to writing on paper which is why I am so curious to try this. The video talked about how using an iPad gives you a different experience than writing on paper. After listening, I personally think the iPad may be the better way to take notes. There are note taking apps that allow you to change color, easily highlight, and even turn your handwriting into text! There are a lot of cool features offered that would be so time consuming if you were taking your notes by hand on paper.

Module 4: Memory

I wanted to focus on the topic of memory because I want to enhance my studying abilities. My personal weakness when studying is my memory. I don’t think I have a bad memory but I know I want to improve my memory. One of the most useful things I learned in this module is that  your memory can only store 4-6 bits of information at a time. Eventually the goal is to get those 4-6 bits to convert to long term memory and be able to retrieve that information stored. I found this interesting because I personally tend to study an entire study guide, rather than break it down into different sections. Going forward in the future, I will try to study material in chunks like this video recommended. Now it makes sense to me why I have had trouble retaining information. I am trying to put too much information into my brain at once and it is not effective. Another important thing I learned is that you need to space out your learning over time to improve the ability to retain that information. I was interested to hear this because I find myself studying frequently but this video talked about the importance of spacing out your learning. Going forward I will try to study progressive in chunks and space out the time I do between them. I would recommend that everyone tries to space out their studying/learning and to focus on a few chunks of material during each session. I am going to try doing this to see if this helps improve my memory. I am very curious if others have tried this and their personal results.

Module 2 Blog: Communication

This weeks module talked about communication on a professional level. I learned about post graduation expectations for group work and how to effectively communicate. I also learned tips and advice for how to effectively work with others.

I enjoy group work and being able to work among my peers. I have learned through experience, and this module, that people have different approaches towards tackling group work. I also am aware that not everyone will get along, or pull their own weight, but it is important to be professional. With that being said, this module explained the importance of communication. Communicating with your group will alleviate any potential issues. Communication is so important to keep things organized and moving forward. I found an article that touches on the importance of group work and emphasizes some of the information in module 2 but also gives other pointers. Group work is intended to be a learning experiencing by allowing individuals to demonstrate their own personal strengths. Group work also keeps everyone involved accountable. I personally learn a lot from people I do group work with. I find it to be very beneficial and a great learning experience. I would advise that a group charter is something that is helpful and is a good point of reference if their becomes disagreements or accountability issues. A charter also pre-assigns parts of the group project to members so it the work is assigned. The video mentioned this tip, as well as four others.
