In Performance Test 1, the robot needed to start in the starting position, start with the light, go up the ramp, come down the ramp, toggle the jack and then touch the three-button panel for bonus [1]. Shaft encoders were not available for this test, so the robot ran based on time. Because time varies based on Proteus power, precise movement was challenging. Because of this, the group found that the most challenging of the tasks was toggling the jack. The idea for achieving this task was just running the robot into the jack. However, this was challenging since there was a very small area near the jack for the robot to navigate. After a lot of testing, the robot could navigate this area and toggle to jack. On February 21, 2018, the group successfully completed Performance Test 1 on the first try. However, the main lesson learned from this Performance Test was that the group would need to implement shaft encoding instead of time for more precise positioning on future performance tests.
