Volunteer Hours

The first volunteer event I participated in was the Columbus marathon. I spent 6 hours volunteering at the marathon which included, helping with set up before the race and then handing out water to the runners as they passed our station. It was overall a good experience being out there with the rest of the group and it put a smile on my face being able to watch the runners up close. Seeing the smiles and excitement on their faces was awesome and being able to help raise money for the hospital made the experience even better.

The second volunteer event that I participated in was helping with the Thanksgiving food drive at my high school. When I was in high school, the basketball team always participated by helping load the buses going out with turkey’s, bread, and several other laundry baskets full of food. I returned over break this year and spent 4 hours helping the basketball team load the buses as well as help load some cars to go out as well. It felt great to be able to help my community in this way. I always have enough to eat at home, especially on Thanksgiving, and it was awesome being able to give that same feeling to someone else.

True Colors Reflection

After completing the True Colors assessment, I found out that I correspond most with the orange group. This means that I am spontaneous, open-minded, and impulsive at times. I have pet-peeves of people who can’t adapt, rude people, and people who can’t take a joke or have fun. These assessments of me are fairly accurate and I related well to the other oranges in my group.

While trying to plan our “vacation” me as well as the other oranges just began shouting out ideas not really paying attention to what others had to say. Instead of thinking about the logistics of each idea and having a set and organized plan, we just decided to go with the flow and have fun where we can. This is accurate to me as a person where I don’t like to be tied down to a specific schedule and plan. I like to be able to do what I want, when I want to do it. It makes life much more fun for me. This contrasted with the gold group who was very upset with how unorganized our “plan” was for the vacation and wanted to get some concrete ideas on paper.

Oranges also disagree with blues where oranges are less compassionate and are more individualistic and blues are much more interested in helping others. I go both ways with this issue where I care deeply about those who I am close to, but choose to only be close with a few people and don’t really stress much about who I am not close to.

My second highest color was green and it makes sense with the logical thinking of greens. When presented with a problem, I can adapt like oranges but I also like to look at the issue logically without many emotions attached. This allows me to be a good problem solver and fix issues for others as well.

Dunn Scholars

Definition of Leadership: My definition of leadership is one who leads by example and also serves those who he is leading. A good leader motivates those around him and is a role model that people would love to rally around.

The most fun I’ve had on a sports team was summer baseball in the summer before my junior year. My coach that year was by far the best I’ve had in my years of athletics. He truly understood us as not only players, but also people. He knew how to balance the fun and hard work, as well as continually push us to be our best. He always had our back in any situation. One tournament I was unable to play in the championship game because I had to work and he drove all the way to my job with the trophy after the game to deliver it that day and take a picture. Things like this motivated us to play harder than we ever have before. That season we also went on a streak of about 17 games without losing. I would describe his coaching as good leadership because he truly did get the best out of us and we all loved playing for him.

I have two younger brothers who watch my every move and I try to lead them the best way I know you through motivation and just showing them right from wrong by my actions. As a good leader you should be invested in those around you so that leading is not a chore but instead something you enjoy doing.

About Me

My name is Drexel Feeling and I started my first year at The Ohio State University this fall. I am a Computer Science and Engineering major and want to work as a software developer in the future. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always played sports. Whether it was, football, basketball, baseball, soccer, bowling, or anything else I have always been running around being active. Because of this background, I decided to join the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars program. In addition, I plan on playing intramural as well as club sports with my classmates as well as work out whenever possible at the RPAC.

I was born and raised in the Cleveland area and will always call that city home. I also have a fairly big family with 3 older sisters and 2 younger brothers. At home I enjoy going to Cavs and Indians games as well as support the Browns whenever possible. I also have worked at my local Chick-Fil-A the past few summers learning several life lessons along the way.

Outside of sports I also enjoy music, particularly hip-hop, and video games. Both my parents graduated from law school and my father did so at The Ohio State University. In addition, two of my sisters have attended this institution in some way shape or form. In addition to my family, I also have a dog named Riley at home who I know I will miss on this journey.

I look forward to this next step in my life at The Ohio State University!
