Lab 3 – Creative Design + Rapid Prototyping

Lab Summary and Takeaways

This week the group did creative drawings for our AEV’s. We designed our own versions of the AEV to see what kind of ideas would come about. The point was get our creativity flowing and see if we could make a better type of the AEV, whether that be better by looks or functionality.

After looking over the creative drawings for ideas on the AEV, two categories strongly present themselves. Some focused strictly on practicality and usage while some were firmly based on design and visual appeal. For example, the design Emily created is very practical. It has a flat surface that can hold all of the things the AEV needs to, such as the battery and the Arduino board. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Megan created to what seems to be a piece meant specifically to add the overall look of the existing AEV. There were also two designs that incorporated the Star Wars theme that the project presented. They are both very unique and incorporate a lot of cool design possibilities, but with the resources provided both seem a little improbable. With the resources, time, and design skills of the team members, it doesn’t seem possible to complete these ideas. However, all of the designs seem that they would do the job of delivering the R2D2 efficiently and effectively. As long as all of the parts that need to be present could find a way to fit on/in the AEV, these could very well work.

_____________________________________________________________________

Objective:

Today’s main focus was meeting as a team to discuss the goals for the week, the previous lab just conducted and the upcoming lab.  Another objective was to decide the roles for writing the progress report.

_____________________________________________________________________

To Do / Action Items:

  • Progress report – due lab 4
  • Discuss roles for teams and creative designs
  • Look at individual creative designs and decide if these designs need 3D printing parts

_____________________________________________________________________

Decision:

  • The group decided not the 3D print parts for now as the designs weren’t reliable enough
  • The group decided on Emily writing the next progress report

Reflections:

  • See if Emily writing the progress report will effect efficiency and grades on progress report
  • Continue to think of different creative designs
