Fairfield County’s Cattlemen Plan Summer and Fall Activities

Recently the Fairfield County Cattlemen’s Board of Directors met and made plans for a variety of upcoming activities they invite you to mark on your calendar and enjoy getting involved with:

Ohio State Fair Steak Barn and Food Pavilion: The Ohio State Fair is only two weeks away and there’s still time to be thinking about promoting your industry there. In fact, would you like to enjoy a day at the state fair and promote beef at the same time?

There’s no better way to promote the beef cattle industry than by helping out with a shift at the Ohio Cattlemen’s Steak Trailer or the Taste of Ohio/Food Pavilion? The shifts are half a day and require 6-8 people. While it may be a lot of work, it’s also a lot of fun! Better yet, it’s always quite an enlightening experience meeting face to face with your consumer.

In addition to getting a free ticket into the Fair and also a free meal, all volunteer groups will receive a 1-day Gate 10 parking pass that gets you parked on the grounds close to the both the Steak Trailer and Food Pavilion.

A few shifts in August for both the Steak Trailer and Food Pavilion remain available to volunteer for. If there’s enough local FCCA members interested to make up an FCCA group, we’ll make the arrangements to do just that. If you’d enjoy assembling your own group to work a shift, that’s an option too. You could include local FFA members, older 4-H youth, or your extended family members who have an interest in the beef cattle industry. Those who have enjoyed working a shift in the past will attest it’s always an education experiencing first hand a day serving the consumer public.

If you’d enjoy working a half day shift in either the Ohio Cattlemen’s Steak Trailer or the Taste of Ohio/Food Pavilion with other local cattlemen, contact FCCA President Dale Decker or Stan Smith to reserve your spot. Or, if you’d prefer to assemble your own work crew for a State Fair shift, contact Stephanie Sindel at the Ohio Cattlemen’s office at (614) 873-6736 to get your group signed up.

ALL FCCA member family cookout, August 19!: You’re invited to an all beef cook-out. Your FCCA Directors have set August 19 at the farm of Ryan and Natalie Smith to have an evening of fellowship and relaxation while enjoying lots of beef. In fact, a highlight of the evening will be to check out a variety of beef products that are up for consideration for the Steak Trailer during this year’s Fair. (Rumor has it the 6 ounce Bay’s Cattleman’s burger is back!).

The only thing you need to bring is your chair. The Directors will have the grills up and going by 6 p.m. Ryan and Natalie are located at 12488 Winchester Road, just south of Slate Run Park. Reservations are requested and more details can be found linked here. Mark the date . . . August 19th!

3rd annual Chili With Beef Cook-off: Back by popular demand to the 167th Fairfield County Fair will be the Championship of the County, Chili with Beef Cook-off sponsored by the Fairfield County Cattlemen’s Association along with support from the Ohio Beef Council! Competition has been intense each of the first two years with 50 pots of chili with beef having competed. In addition to the cook-off, some new beef related activities are being planned to be held throughout the judging which will be held again in the AGmazing Agri-Center on Thursday of the Fair.

To enter, the recipe should include beef as the only meat, plus no more than 12 additional ingredients. Find the rest of the entry details linked here.

Entries must be made through the Fairfield County Senior Fair Board office on the Fairgrounds through the normal “open class” entry procedure. Enter Class #118 in Entry Book 40, found on page 60 in the Fairfield County Fair Entry Book. The entry form will be found in the back of the Fair Entry Book and entry deadline is September 25.

In addition, other Fair related activities of the FCCA will include the Steak Trailer and sponsorship of the Open Beef Show’s County Bred, Born & Raised class and Pee Wee Beef Showmanship (see page 32 in the Fair Entry Book for details). Plus, the Jr. beef exhibitors will likely find a few more activities that are still in the planning stages.
