Artifacts

I chose to explore the coffee and tea shops here in Columbus for my to do list. I’m really looking forward to getting to experience a variety of little shops with my friends over the next few weeks. As an avid drinker of coffee from a young age, I always love getting to test out new flavors and the different brews of various shops. Out of this assignment I hope to discover a new source of delicious brew to fuel my studio projects while simultaneously getting credit for class. We have an excuse to get out of Haverfield and Knowlton for a little while and experience some important areas of the city. My friends and I began with Mission Coffee Co. because it was one of the closest to campus, only a short #2 COTA away from home.

The Mission Coffee Co. was a very comfortable coffee shop. It was a classic little hipster joint, lighting was dim, there was a widespread use of wood in the floors, the small stage, and the walls, and the classic espresso machines of every good coffee shop. The coffee was delicious, and they offer sizes from 3 oz up to the normal 16 oz cups that are most common. The space was a remodeled garage, the street facing facade was literally an old, painted garage door. I loved the small menu, yeah there weren’t a ton of choices, but everything was made with care and you could watch the barista prepare each and every cup and create a design with the cream. I would recommend for friends to visit this little hole in the wall over on Price Avenue off of High Street. Its a fun atmosphere when you go with friends, or a relaxing one for schoolwork.

Our next coffee shop was the Kerouac Cafe on high street only a short walk from lane avenue. The cafe is somewhat hidden on the main street, their sign is subtle and we nearly missed it walking there in the evening. It was a cozy little place, nice and warm and everybody was relaxed and studying. It was definitely more popular with college kids than Mission was. Their hot chocolate is pretty good, and I would consider going back even if just for the environment. They had old records, books, and comics for sale along with cookies and snacks with their coffee. This visit was a nice break from the daily rigors of school for sure, I’d recommend it to my friends as a place to just get work done.

The final 3 coffee shops were Zen Cha Tea Salon, Impero Coffee, and Cup o’ Joe Clintonville, as shown above. Zen Cha was a different experience for me, I had never been to a tea shop and it was a very relaxing experience, not to mention the delicious, wide variety of teas they offered. I would happily return to this location. Impero Coffee was a tiny shop with very personal service. They had some unique flavors as well, they put honey in some of their coffees. I’d stop by here again as well because I just really like coffee. And Cup o’ Joe, my favorite of the 5 coffee shops, was a decent sized shop ona street corner. The barista was very polite and explained the menu items to us since it was our first time. Clearly I would recommend this place. In this process, I learned that Columbus citizens sure love their coffee shops. They use them for everything from just reading the news to doing homework, socializing, and just getting out of the house. There is a large number of them on high street alone. This project has made me want to visit some of the other categories on the to do list site. The bus rides were good, my friends and I had a fun time sitting together and relaxing after a long day. Not to mention this got us out of Knowlton for the coffee we needed and out of Haverfield after a long day of schooling. For anyone else aspiring to complete this list, I would suggest visiting them from farthest away to the closest. The 5 we went to were all located on high street at varying distances from campus. As time goes on its just convenient to go somewhere close when you have classes the next day and want to accomplish something in the evenings as exams start to creep up.

About Me

I am a member of the architecture scholars program here at OSU. I major in architecture with a possible minor in psychology. I am a member of LEGO Club look forward to more involvement on campus. I played golf in high school and I try to play in my free time as well while the summer is nice. I enjoy bad jokes as well as the occasional good one. I’m having a good time so far exploring campus at my leisure.

I thought welcome week was an awesome experience. I’ve never lived in an area with so many people, so it was an entirely new experience for me. It was great to be involved with my new community immediately upon moving here. My classes so far are not what I expected them to be. I was thinking I would go in not knowing anybody and then receive overwhelming amounts of homework every time. So far there has been a very large amount of drawing and self-taught skills, which I somewhat expected after hearing stories from a friend of mine who is an architect. I am adjusting well, I think, to my new life away from home. I stay on schedule and have plenty of free time to interact with my new friends. I previously expected everywhere to be very crowded and feel overwhelmed with all of the new people, but the Scholars program really helped to shrink the world of OSU down to a more manageable size in just a short week.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Semester Reflection

I plan to attend the Scholars meetings in the coming semester as well as in subsequent years. I will also stay in touch with my scholars friends and continue to live with or near them if I am able. I would like to explore more with psychology, which I am next semester, and after that I’m not entirely sure what classes I would like to take. I don’t have many requirements left to fulfill, so I will have to look into the offered classes a lot more this next semester. I thought about joining STEP, but I have little to no idea what my project would be, my friends and I may come up with something though. This coming summer I plan to try and get an internship with an architect back home who I’ve known for a few years. I am also going on the Santiago Chile and culture spring break education abroad trip this coming march and I am very excited for that because two of my new friends will be going as well. This trip will help me to learn more about the G.O.A.L.S. with global awareness, I will show leadership through my continued interest in volunteer work, I will always strive for academic excellence, as I had through all of high school, and I will hopefully utilize STEP to help with some personal research ideas.
