G.O.A.L.S. : Collegiate 4-H

Here at OSU I am involved in collegiate 4-H. In this organization we complete community service projects and educate ourselves on world issues such as diversity and food insecurity. I am also a part of a committee that is currently planning to host the national 4-H conference here in Columbus in 2019 or 2020.

Mentorship Presentation

This was a speech I gave in my agricultural communications class on why you should be a mentor. This is very important to me because I am very determined to help as many young people as I can. Many children grow up without good role models and therefore fall by the wayside and often enter a vicious cycle of poverty. I want to help end that by not only talking those children through hard times, but demonstrating that they can succeed if they work at it.

Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

Recently for a class, I was asked to discuss what I believed leadership was. I have been asked hundreds of times what a leader does or what qualities make a good leader, but never what leadership/being a leader actually meant. After a lot of consideration, this is what I came up with “To me, leadership doesn’t necessarily mean telling people what they need to do. It is acting as a medium for the consolidation of ideas in order to work toward a goal/the success of yourself and those around you. It is also being there to channel the energies of the group solely in a positive or constructive direction and not inward on its own or members’ shortcomings. So in summary, leadership is streamlining and directing a group’s energy and ideas to be as effective as possible while keeping the peace among the members.” I believe this description touches on most of the important aspects of leadership, but more importantly, it made me consider how I lead and how I can better lead.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.: Study Abroad

With respect to Global Awareness, I am hoping that some time in the near future I will be able to study abroad on an Animal Sciences trip. From this experience I want to come back and apply some of what I observed over there to our methods in America. I believe incorporating different styles will help to make our system more efficient.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. The ACES film project

For this project, my group watched a movie called lost for life. It explored how the justice system dealt with minors who were charged with murder. The movie really opened my eyes to some of the situations I may encounter with youth, especially at risk youth. This project was extremely beneficial to me because we had to discuss and ponder each character’s story in order to create the final product. This made me have a deeper understanding than if we had to work on these projects solo.

A little about me

I love mentoring younger children to help them realize their potential. This is me with my first 4-H mentee as he took his projects to compete at the fair.

My name is Dale Farrow-Harris and I am a Freshman this year. For several reasons, coming to Ohio State has always been an expectation I had for myself. As a Columbus native, I knew that I wanted to make a difference close to home, and OSU was the common sense choice. My parents immigrated to America from Trinidad to attend University, and I was born the year my father graduated from OSU’s Fischer college of business with his MBA. I grew up in a large family (I had 5 siblings) and have been very close with my family my whole life. From K-12th grade, I was homeschooled in an online school. This really fostered a hands on, ask-or-you-won’t-know learning style in me that has carried into college. Throughout highschool, I was heavily involved in 4-H, and I am continuing to do so in Collegiate 4-H here at OSU. In addition to this, I have been a Taekwondo instructor since before I was in the 8th grade and continue to teach at my club. I am currently pursuing a Pre-Vet track in hopes of following in my mother’s footsteps and becoming a veterinarian. If these plans do not work out, I hope to become involved in another area of animal care, or Educational extension through 4-H.
