Another organization that I am so happy to be a part of this year is the University Ambassadors Program. This program allows me to share my love for Ohio State with prospective students and their families through informational tours. This program has allowed me to improve my communication skills, public speaking skills, and problem-solving skills. I can’t wait to see where this program will take me!

G.O.A.L.S

For my global awareness component, I have taken different general education classes that have expanded my knowledge on the world around me, such as my Asian Philosophy class. I also plan on using my STEP money to study abroad in May of next year, and possibly go to either Italy or Canada. Both will provide me with a different world view.

For my original inquiry component, I have yet to conduct any research, but I am currently looking into doing something related to my major of Public Affairs. In my different Public Affairs classes, I have been able to create policy suggestions on real world issues.

For my academic enrichment component, I have decided to pursue two minors in order attain my future aspirations of working in a government relations for the private sector. I also plan on pursing a combined degree program to attain my Masters in Public Administration as well as my Bachelor of Arts. I also specifically chose general education courses that would allow me to expand on areas I have interest in, just possibly not enough time to pursue a major or minor in.

For leadership development, my scholars program the Mount Leadership Society Scholars allows me to grow as a leader through leadership development programs everyday. I am a chair of a committee for Mount Scholars, as well as becoming a University Ambassador and joining both a sorority and Undergraduate Student Government. All of these have allowed me to expand my leadership skills. I also think I am more of a collaborative leader who takes the opinions of those who I am leading into account.

Lastly, I am currently serving at a community kitchen in downtown Columbus. This has given me the opportunity to connect with Columbus and reflect on my privilege in food security. I also plan on volunteering at a different site in Columbus to give me even more of a connection.

Another club that I have joined is OSU Pen Pals. OSU Pen Pals has the goal of reaching to youth in the Columbus City school system and giving them an example of a college student. Pen Pals has given me the opportunity to extend my volunteerism outside of Ohio State and into the Columbus community. I am able to serve as a mentor to someone, which is also very important to me. I enjoy reading the letters my pen pal writes back, as it shows the impact that having someone to talk to can have on a child. Pen Pals is an experience that I will never forget, as it allows me to connect with someone outside of Ohio State and into the larger community of Columbus.

I have just joined the Undergraduate Student Government, and it has been an amazing experience. USG has the goal of making Ohio State a place where every student can thrive. I was placed into the Diversity and Inclusion committee, where I will be working on the End Hate OSU campaign. End Hate OSU strives to better acceptance at Ohio State. As soon as I got into Ohio State, I knew I wanted to make a change with USG. Ohio State’s student government is unique in the sense that we employ a shared governance system, where students have a voice in all policy matters. Two initiatives were just passed, focusing on student affairs. Another reason why I decided to join USG was due to my major. I am majoring in Public Affairs, and USG is teaching me many things that the classroom can’t. I am able to form policy and initiatives directly impacting myself and my peers. Undergraduate Student Government has been a great experience for me so far, and I am so excited to see where it takes me.

Career

My various job and volunteer experiences have given me different skills that I believe could be applicable to any future career. For example, I worked as a Customer Service Team Leader in high school at Mitchells Ice Cream. There, I learned valuable skills regarding customer service. As a college student, The Mount Leadership Society Scholars has given me many valuable skills regarding service. I have volunteered with many different Columbus nonprofits which have not only taught me a lot about the citizens of Columbus, but I have learned that I have skills in event planning and marketing. Currently, I serve as a Sustainability Committee Representative in Undergraduate Student Government where I promote sustainability campaigns. This has taught me how to connect with the undergraduate student population at Ohio State as well as valuable outreach skills. I also work as a University Ambassador, where I lead 90 minute informational tours to prospective students. This job has taught me public speaking skills, leadership skills, and problem solving skills. I would be excited to bring any of these skills to a workplace.
