Join Tractor Maintenance 4-H Club in 2020!

Do you know of someone who has an interest in maintaining engines and equipment? Do you know someone who regularly works with dirt bikes, lawn mowers, tractors, or other small engine powered equipment?

The Tractor Maintenance & Small Engines 4-H Club is looking for new members! 4-H is a non-formal, educational youth development program for individuals age 8 and in 3rd grade or 9 years old to age 19 as of January 1, 2020. This 4-H club teaches individuals how to work on small engines and tractors while visiting different businesses and ag shops. You do not have to have any experience with small engines or tractors – This is a great opportunity to learn something new!

The club meets every Monday in January and February with a banquet in March. The first meeting will be Monday, January 6th at 7:00p.m. at the Fairfield County Ag Center, 831 College Ave, Lancaster. Youth Welding Workshops – April 13th and June 8th (Registration is required!)

Back by popular demand! OSU’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, in partnership with American Welding Society-Columbus Section, Lincoln Electric, and HETEN Engineering and Laboratory, are pleased to offer TWO Youth Welding Workshops this year:

  • Saturday April 13, 2019 – registration deadline is April 8.
    (same day as OSU Spring game; FREE parking)
  • Saturday June 8, 2019 – registration deadline is May 24.

Cost = $90/participant

Age of participant = 10-18

Location = OSU Columbus Campus, Agricultural Engineering Building

Choice of one welding process: Arc (‘stick’) welding OR Oxy (‘torch’) welding.

Registration includes:

  • Practice pieces of metal
  • Welding related supplies
  • Welding technique handouts
  • Lunch for youth participants

NO experience necessary. The instructors are looking forward to help youth learn!

Registration is limited to the first 24 participants for EACH TYPE of welding.

Scholarships ARE available –please see details in the flyer, which is linked below. We ask you reserve your spot(s) with a credit card; and if awarded a scholarship, you will not be charged (similar to reserving a hotel room).

On-site registration opens ~8:30AM the day of the welding workshop. The program will begin promptly at 9AM. The day will likely conclude by 4PM.

NO PARENTS/GUESTS allowed in the welding labs. There will be an informal program during the day for parents/guests, or you are welcome to enjoy the Spring games in Ohio Stadium.

Teachers, and/or certified/trained/self-taught welders: Please let us know if you have INTEREST in serving as an instructor at one of these workshops.

Participants need to bring or wear industrial-quality eye protection, long sleeve shirt, long pants (100% cotton pants such as jeans are best, NO cotton/ poly bend such as athletic pants), and high-top foot protection (No open-toe shoes, sandals, etc.).

 

Tractor Maintenance End of Year Update

On February 25th the 4-H Tractor club went to the Liberty Union High School work shop and to the Specialty Tractor on March 4th where everyone was tested. The banquet will be March 11th, 6:30pm at Amanda United Methodist Church (200 East High Street, Amanda, Ohio). We had a great season and hope to see everyone there. Here are some pictures at the Cupp Residence/Farm Shop where we had one of our meetings.

Teens interested in agricultural careers don’t want to miss this amazing and FREE opportunity to spend a week on a college campus exploring the world of agricultural careers.

Tractor Maintenance News Update

 The Tractor club met at Ag-Pro Ohio (formerly JD Equipment) on Jan 28th and at Fairfield County Fairgrounds this last week (2/4). At Ag-Pro Ohio everyone got to tour the workshop and see combines and tractors. At the Fairgrounds the small engine group experimented with cooling water with and without a fan and the older groups started an engine. Just a reminder that the banquet is March 11th at Amanda Methodist Church (200 East High Street) and costs $10 per person. See a club member for more information.​ The next meeting will be 7pm, February 11th, at the Travis Cupp Farm Shop (6130 Duncan Road, Lancaster.)

Deadline to Join Tractor Maintenance – Jan 25th!

The 4-H Tractor Maintenance Club started their first meeting of 2019 by electing officers, introducing the advisors, and deciding on dues. The first meeting was held at the Ag Center at the OSU Fairfield County Extension. The second meeting was held at ASK Powersports in Lancaster. The club constitution was reviewed and adopted and Roger Seitz talked about the banquet. The group split into groups by year for Tractor Maintenance and Small Engines and had refreshments after the meeting.   There is still time to join until January 25th! The next meeting will be at Millersport Agri Service on January 21st at 7pm.
