Ten 4-H Clubs donated 518 pounds of non-perishable food items and the Master Gardener donated 76 items too!! The Fairfield County Junior Leaders were able to split their 567 donated items between Maywood Mission, Columbus Blessing Boxes Project, and the Vineyard Church to help our neighbors in need. Special thanks to Farm Credit Mid-America for their generous support of this community giving project by donating cash prizes for those clubs donating the most total pounds of food.

2024 4-H Family Guides Available Online

Although the 2023 Fairfield County Fair is just in the rearview mirror, it’s never to early to start planning 4-H projects for the 2024 year!

The 2024 Family Guide is available online at https://ohio4h.org/familyguide. Each family that had a member or advisor enrolled in 4-H in 2023 will receive a print copy by mail in mid to late January. Ohio 4-H is able to provide these copies directly to our members through the support of Kroger and the Ohio 4-H Foundation.

Now is a great time to start looking and which projects your 4-H members plan to take in 2024. Most project books are available for purchase year round from our local Extension Office.

Please also remember to utilize Project Central when searching for projects. You can search by topic, keyword, name, or skill/age level. You can view sample pages of the project book and read reviews written by members/parents/advisors who have taken/worked with that project. If you haven’t already, please go to the projects that you took last year and write a review of that project. It helps future members as they search for projects.

4-H Booth Information and Setup

The 4-H theme for 2023 is “4-H is the Ticket to Success.”  Clubs should decorate their booth using this theme. Please note, no straw, sand, mulch, feathers, etc. is permitted in the displays. To view a booth score rubric, see the Advisors Resources on our website!

  • The club booths will be in the Ed Sands Building. All booth related questions should be directed toward Haley at 768@osu.edu.
  • If your club is not requesting a booth, there will be a special area in the Ed Sands Building for your member’s projects to be displayed. A reminder that for a member to receive a premium for their project, it MUST BE DISPLAYED the entire week of the fair!
  • 4-H Display Setup is Friday October 6th from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, 7th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (NO SUNDAY SETUP!).
  • 4-H Display Tear Down is Sunday, October 15th, 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. No booths or projects may be removed prior to this time!
  • There will not be display barn guards this year.
  • A reminder when creating your club booths – if you are including pictures of your members, please make sure that the photo release was checked and electronically signed via 4-HOnline by the parent of your members. No photos of members who did not accept the photo release should be displayed. If you need to see who did not agree to a photo release, please contact the Extension Office.

HealthU Registration is Open!

HEALTHU

Are you a 4-H’er interested in health? Do you see yourself potentially working in health one day? Nutritionist? Therapist? Nurse? Athletic Trainer? Geneticist?

What: Health University (HealthU) is a weekend camp in October focused on Healthy Living for 7th through 12th graders in Ohio 4-H. Join us at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp for a weekend as we explore four of the 10 Dimensions of Wellness and explore health-related careers. We will be exploring the following four tracks of wellness:

  • Physical wellness allows a person to engage in activities of daily living without experiencing undue fatigue or exhaustion. The physical dimension of wellness is supported through health behaviors, which include exercise, eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol intake, not smoking, and getting adequate sleep each night.
  • Emotional wellness involves recognizing, accepting, and expressing feelings. Adequate rest is required for wellness in this dimension. If an individual’s mental function is hindered by stress and lack of sleep, they may struggle with accurately assessing a situation which then triggers negative emotional responses and disrupts emotional wellness.
  • Social wellness requires the ability to trust and respect other people and leads to the creation of supportive partnerships and friendships. Being socially well allows one to develop and maintain intimacy, and to have empathy and respect for others.
  • Creative wellness allows a person to appreciate and/or participate in a diverse range of arts or cultural experiences, and to value and cherish the surrounding world. Freely expressing thoughts and emotions through dance, song, drawing, painting, or writing are some of the ways to engage in creative wellness.
