Quality Assurance should be completed for Ohio State Fair exhibitors by June 1st

Fairfield County 4-H and FFA youth planning to exhibit at the Ohio State Fair must have their Quality Assurance completed by June 1st, 2022. Youth who do not meet this requirement, will have any entries denied.

If youth still need to complete Quality Assurance to meet this requirement and your club/chapter is not planning to host their own QA Clinic by June 1st, we recommend you complete QA through the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals online modules or attend the countywide makeup QA Training May 22nd at NOON.

  • In-Person Countywide Make-Up Clinic: To be held on Sunday, May 22nd from 12:00 p.m.- 1:30 p.m. in the Ed Sands Building at the Fairgrounds. An RSVP is required. Please click here to register for a countywide QA makeup clinic.
  • Online: Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). This is the ONLY approved ONLINE Quality Assurance Program for youth in Ohio. For 2022, this web-based course has been approved by ODA for 8-18 year olds.

    • Exhibitors must complete by June 30, 2022 or they will not be able to show at the Fairfield County Fair.
    • You will need to select the web-based training ($12.00 per member, annually).
    • When you are finished, please send name(s) and certificate number(s) to Leslie Cooksey at cooksey.25@osu.edu.

4-H Demonstration Contest – Sign-up by June 1st

Sign-up NOW through Wednesday, June 1st to participate in the Fairfield County 4-H Demonstration Contest by calling the Extension Office at 740-653-5419.

When: Wednesday, June 8th, 2022 (notice this date has been moved up into June, rather than July)

Time: 10:00 a.m.

Who: Any 4-H member

What: A contest designed to demonstrate your ability to teach how to do something. There are Junior and Senior Divisions! For more information contact the Extension Office

Where: Ag Center, 831 College Avenue, Lancaster Why: To share your talents or skills with others and improve your teaching abilities.

Speaking Contest Event – Sign up by June 1st

Speak out and get involved! Improve your public speaking skills and raise awareness of health and safety topics. The Fairfield County Health & Safety Speaking Event will be Wednesday, June 8th, 2022 starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Ag Center. Any 4-H or Cloverbud member can participate. The following events will take place:

  • Junior and Senior Individual Health & Safety Speaking Events
  • Health & Safety Speaking Team Event
  • 4-H Creed Speaking Event
  • 4-H Pledge Speaking Event (Cloverbuds Only)

Earn a chance to also participate in the Ohio State Fair with the Health & Safety events!

Ohio State Fair Scholarship Deadline: May 15th, 2022

In an effort to recognize the quality youth of Ohio, and to help those interested in furthering their education, the Ohio Expositions Commission has established a Scholarship Program for Ohio State Fair participants.

The purpose of these scholarships is to assist high school juniors and seniors and graduates who are continuing their education at an accredited institution in an under graduate course of study in any field.

The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to not issue a scholarship if no applicant fulfills the requirements.

 

Rules

The applicant must be a high school junior or senior or a graduate continuing their education at an accredited institution in an under graduate course of study. They must reside in the State of Ohio and must have been both eligible to be a participant in the Junior Fair (not older than 19 years of age as of January 1, 2022) and must have served as an active participant in both the Ohio State Fair Junior Division and their local county fair.

All questions on the application form must be answered to be considered for an award. High school and/or college transcript must be attached, along with copies of ACT and/or SAT scores. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

Applications will be judged on the following basis:

  • 25% Scholastic Standing
  • 20% Citizenship and Leadership
  • 25% Ohio State Fair Participation
  • 20% County Fair Participation
  • 10% Essay

Applicants may be required to be interviewed at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

Previous winners are eligible to compete, as long as they meet the above requirements.

Scholarship winners will be notified by July 27. All scholarships will be awarded during the Sale of Champions at the Ohio State Fair on Sunday, Aug. 7.

The Hall of Fame Scholarship will be awarded during the Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame Luncheon on Thursday, August 4.

Completed applications must be postmarked by May 15, 2022.

Camp Registration is OPEN – Spots are Limited!

Don’t miss out on your opportunity to attend 4-H Camp this summer! Camp registrations are coming in since there are limited spots this year make sure you get your registration in today!

  • Intermediate Overnight Camp – 25 Boy Spots, 36 Girl Spots

What will we do at Camp?

Our camp counselors are hard at work making sure we’re going to have the best summer yet. Tar Hollow activities include swimming and boating at Pine Lake, nature, crafts, recreation, tye dye,
campfires, inspiration, and many other activities. Alley Park activities include archery, canoeing, crafts, games, songs, campfire, tye dye, and more!

Camp Dates: (We are aware that some orange member handbooks have conflicting information, the following are the correct dates and grades)

  • Cloverbud Day Camp (grades K-2, Cloverbud Members) – June 4
  • Day Camp (Grades 3,4,5,6,7,8,9) – June 14-16 – Alley Park
  • Intermediate Camp (Grades 6,7,8,9) – June 20-23 – Tar Hollow
  • Junior Camp (Grades 3,4,5) – June 29-July 2 – Tar Hollow

Registration Details:

  • Registrations will be done online, and are on a first-come-first-serve basis starting on May 1, 2022. Families will have the option to join a waitlist if all spots fill up for the camp they want to attend.
  • Registration can be found here: go.osu.edu/FCCamp
    • Payment by credit card will be available this year. If you will be paying by check or cash, please select appropriate payment type in the registration process and send or drop off your payment (check or cash) to the OSUE office (OSU Extension, 831 College Ave., Suite D, Lancaster, OH 43130). Registration will be complete upon receipt of application and payment. Make checks payable to: OSU EXTENSION. There will be a $30.00 charge for all returned checks.
  • Friend Requests can be made during the registration process. We recognize the importance of sharing a camp experience with a friend. To request the same cabin as a friend, friends must be requested by each other to create this group. A maximum of two campers can request to be together. This is the only opportunity to request a cabin assignment with your friend.
    • Please remember, there is no guarantee that the request can be honored, but we will do our best. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Aubry Fowler, Camp Director, at Fowler.443@osu.edu.
  • Bertha Wilson Trust will provide a 50% campership again this year if registered by June 1st
    • Members will only have to pay  $40 for Day, $75 for Intermediate or Junior, and $20 for Cloverbud
  • Members are welcome to attend both Day Camp and Overnight at Tar Hollow if they wish and spaces are available. However they will only receive a scholarship on the Tar Hollow camp and be required to pay the full amount ($80) to attend Day Camp. If you are interested in attending both camps, please email fairfield4h@osu.edu to receive more information about registration and payment options.
  • Once registration is complete and payment received, additional information will be provided including what to bring, necessary forms, and a map to camp.

Bottle Cap Weigh In: May 7th and/or May 22nd

4-H Clubs do you have bottle caps to weigh in?

Please bring all clean plastic bottle caps in a trash bag and/or box to the May Weigh-Ins at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds!

Weigh Ins will take place in the #4 Beef Barn at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds on:

  • Saturday, May 7th, 9:00 – 11:00am
  • Sunday, May 22nd, 11:00am – 1:00pm

Reminder on the rules:

  • Work within your club to collect clean plastic bottle caps and lids.
  • Collect only caps that are approved – they must be ALL plastic and clean (no food residue please)
  • Store them during our “off” time in bags – inside a box – they will get heavy
  • Bring them to the Extension Office for the Club Weigh-In 
  • Fundraise to purchase a bench for your club Contact Aubry (Fowler.443@osu.edu) for more details (optional)
  • The club who collects the most caps by weight will receive a bench sponsored by the Junior Leaders and a personalized plaque for their bench.
