4-H Day is March 2nd – Help Needed!

Our annual 4-H recruitment event – “4-H Day” will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at the AAA Building at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. as we promote the program to prospective 4-H members and families.

We are looking for club members to volunteer the day of the event bring high quality project displays and to staff their displays for the duration of the event. You will be talking with families and potential members about your projects!

We are also looking for club advisors to set up a table display promoting their club and recruiting members to join.

Tractor Maintenance News Update

 The Tractor club met at Ag-Pro Ohio (formerly JD Equipment) on Jan 28th and at Fairfield County Fairgrounds this last week (2/4). At Ag-Pro Ohio everyone got to tour the workshop and see combines and tractors. At the Fairgrounds the small engine group experimented with cooling water with and without a fan and the older groups started an engine. Just a reminder that the banquet is March 11th at Amanda Methodist Church (200 East High Street) and costs $10 per person. See a club member for more information.​ The next meeting will be 7pm, February 11th, at the Travis Cupp Farm Shop (6130 Duncan Road, Lancaster.)

Fairfield SWCD Scholarship – due 3/31/2019

The Fairfield Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will offer two $500 college scholarships per year.

Applicants must be graduating from high school and be residents of Fairfield County. Home-schooled students are eligible as well.  At the time of application, applicants must have achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Applicants need to be pursuing a degree in the fields of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation or Environmental Education. Examples of some eligible degrees include: Agriculture, Ag Engineering, Aquatic Ecology, Biological Sciences, Conservation Planning, Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Forestry, Natural Resource Conservation, Soils, or Wildlife. Call the SWCD office if you have a question about your area of interest.

Eligible post secondary institutions include technical colleges, two-year associates or four-year bachelor’s degree programs. If you plan to attend something other than the above, please call the SWCD office to check on eligibility.

Fairfield County Farm Bureau Scholarship

The Fairfield County Farm Bureau Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that the county will be awarding college scholarships for the 2019-2020 academic year.  The number of scholarships awarded will be based on the number of quality applications that are received. The deadline for entry is April 1, 2019.

The winners will also receive a Young Active Farm Bureau membership.

Ohio FFA Scholarships – due 3/15/2019

This year the Ohio FFA Foundation is awarding more than $27,000 in scholarships to current FFA members through five different scholarship funds. One application for five scholarship opportunities!

Applications are due March 15, 2019 and winners will be notified by April 19, 2019.

The five scholarships are:

  • Earl “Doc” Kantner Scholarship
  • Ed Johnson Scholarship
  • Ohio State Fair Scholarship
  • Growing America’s Farmer Scholarship
  • HBPA Scholarship

The application includes four essay questions. Please have your essay responses prepared in another document to copy into the application, as you cannot save your work and return later.

Fairfield County Foundation Scholarships – due 3/15/2019

The Fairfield County Foundation scholarship application for the 2019-2020 school year is open! Many students have already submitted their completed applications, and they look forward to receiving more as they near the March 15th, 2019 deadline. Current college students as well as high school seniors are encouraged to apply. Their simple, general application will automatically narrow down the scholarships that each student is eligible for, as well as suggest those that may require more information.

They have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and examples that they recommend students review prior to submitting their application. The Foundation encourages students and parents to follow us on Facebook throughout the application process for important updates and reminders. Don’t miss your opportunity to be awarded one of over 80 scholarships given annually!

Junior Leadership Club Meeting – February 11th!

Are you a 4-Her who is at least 13 years old? Want to get involved in leadership opportunities? The Junior Leadership Club is looking for you! The next Junior Leadership Club meeting is Monday, February 11th at 6:00pm at the Extension Office (831 College Ave, Lancaster). We would love to see you there!

Our first Community Service Project will be to participate in Project Backpack with Lancaster Kiwanis. They are a great supporter of the 4-H program and we want to give back by helping with this project! The Kiwanis Club works with Fairfield County Children’s Protective Services to provide these backpacks with comfort items that a child may need when they are removed from their home on an emergency basis. We would like for you to bring an item to the meeting on Monday, to donate that will be used to fill backpacks for those in need.

Here is a list of recommended items (Please only bring new items):

-Coloring Books, Crayons or Art Supplies

-Small Animals, Small Stuffed Animals

-Books, Journals

-Hygiene Items like Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Shampoo or Body Wash
