Barrow and Lamb MQP Update

We are planning to have Dr. Moeller offer a program for both the Barrow and Lamb MQP participants at the conclusion.

As you know, growth of participation in both the Barrow and Lamb MQP programs has been nothing short of remarkable in recent years. Last year for the first time we had more youth wanting to participate in Barrow MQP than we had the ability to accommodate. While we have yet to reach that point with Lamb MQP, last year we were in fact, very close to our limit. That said, as we’ve worked with our Barrow and Lamb Superintendents and OSU’s Dr. Moeller exploring alternatives, our goal since last fall has been to find a way that allows as many youth as possible the opportunity to enjoy the experience of participating in the MQP programs in 2019 and beyond.

We’re pleased to announce we are in the final stages of developing that plan and have only a few details remaining to be finalized. This is the time line for moving forward, and the detail that we can announce at this time Continue reading

Pork Industry Scholarship Application – due 3/15/2019

The Pork Checkoff sponsors a scholarship program available to college students who are current juniors or seniors planning to pursue a career field related to swine production. Those planning to attend veterinary or graduate school and major in a discipline with an emphasis on swine are also encouraged to apply for scholarships.

“The pork industry is committed to continual improvement in producing safe, wholesome protein. Identifying and developing the next generation of leaders and decision-makers is critical to this continual improvement,” says Chris Hostetler, Animal Science Director for the Pork Checkoff. “A survey of previous scholarship winners revealed that 80 percent are pursuing advanced degrees in preparation to serve the industry as veterinarians, nutritionists, reproductive biologists and management consultants.”

Donate Items to Lancaster Kiwanis Club – Project Backpack!

The Junior Leadership Club would like to ask for your help in supporting the Kiwanis’ Project Backpack.

Project Backpack’s goal is to provide a string backpack filled with personal items to each child removed from their home on an emergency basis by Children’s Protective Services. The Lancaster Kiwanis Club has been participating in this project since 2012 in order to fill backpacks that are given out to children in Fairfield County CPS.

The Junior Leaders are working to collect items that can be used to fill the backpacks. Some suggestions are:

-Coloring Books, Crayons, Art Supplies

-Small Toys, Small Stuffed Animals

-Books, Journals

-Hygiene Items: Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Shampoo or Body Wash

Please bring only new items into the Extension Office and give them to our office staff by February 28th. If you have any committees or groups that are meeting before the end of the month, please feel free to share this information.
