Final Premier Exhibitor Testing Date

There will be one final opportunity for Fairfield County 4-H and FFA youth to complete their Premier Exhibitor Test. The following species can participate: Dairy Cattle Breeding, Dairy Beef Feeder, Beef Cattle, Swine, Sheep, Dairy/Angora Goat, Meat/Market Goat, Pygmy Goat, Poultry, and Rabbits. Guys and Gals Sheep Lead Contest Information

The Guys and Gals Sheep Lead Contest will be held on Wednesday October 10, 2018 in the Feeder Creek Show Arena at the 2018 Fairfield County Fair.  This  year the event will start at 6:30 p.m. Entries in this class are open to all guys and gals, 3 years old and older, who have an interest in sheep and wool fashion. Participants may lead a ewe or market lamb, conditioned, fit and trained to a show halter. The entrant will be judged on the handling of their sheep and the fashion and style of their predominantly wool outfit.  Classes will be divided into categories from ages 3 years old to adult.  Deadline for commentaries is September 25, 2018. Junior Fair Queen Applications: Due Friday, September 7th!

The 2018 Fairfield County Junior Fair Queen Cover Letter and Application can be found here. Applications were mailed to eligible 4-H members earlier this month.  FFA members should ask their FFA Advisor for applications or print off from the link at the beginning of this paragraph. Signed Junior Fair Queen Applications (with photo!) are due to the Extension Office by 4:00 pm on September 7, 2018.  Don’t forget to sign the application and include a picture!

Attention Livestock Exhibitors: DUNF Forms now available!

The Drug Use Notification Forms (DUNF) are now available at the Senior Fair Office and the OSU Extension Office. Advisors should please send a representative from your club to pick-up the forms. Forms will be due at weigh-in for each species. As a reminder, our county code is 94. Continuing from 2017: Per page 7 of the Junior Fair Book, Rule 26 states: Market animals and any species that requires a DUNF must be free from any/all drugs in their system at fair weigh-in day.

All exhibitors at the Fairfield County Junior Fair must abide by the rules listed in the 2018 Junior Fair Book. Please note that animals must be drug free or within tolerance by weigh-in day of fair. Each member is to bring a completed Drug Use Notification Form (DUNF) to weigh-in at fair. Livestock exhibitors must have completed a Quality Assurance Training by June 30, 2018 and should indicated so on the DUNF in order to exhibit at the 2018 Fairfield County Junior Fair. If the forms are not correctly completed, exhibitors will not be permitted to show.

4-H Fall Flower Sale at Lancaster Greenhouse: September 15th and 16th!

Are you ready for fall?

Come support the Fairfield County 4-H Advisory Committee by shopping at Lancaster Greenhouse and Nursery on September 15th and 16th, 2018. Hours are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

This is a fundraising event for the 4-H Advisory Committee. The 4-H Advisory Committee supports county 4-H programming for all youth members and adult volunteers including, but not limited to: awards and banquets, trips and scholarships, printing costs, special programming costs and more!

Supporters must present coupon at the time of purchase and 15% will go directly to the Fairfield County 4-H Program. Please share this post with family members and friends! We will post this coupon the blog next week!

Ohio 4-H Achievement Form Workshops

This year, the Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council will be hosting TWO achievement form workshops.  One is earlier this year, which is why you are receiving this email now!

Here is the basic information about it:

  • What: Achievement Form Workshop
    • Basic Overview-Ideal for first time achievement form completion or general information. This session will cover basic information about completing the form. (See below for more in-depth / coaching session.)
  • Who: 4-H members completing the achievement form, AND 4-H professionals/parents/advisors who want to learn more
  • Why: Learn about opportunities that can arise from successful achievement form completion, improve record keeping skills, enhance forms to make them even stronger
  • When: Saturday, September 15, 2018, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
  • Where: Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center
  • Cost: FREE
  • Zoom: We are going to try to offer a Zoom (video conferencing) option!  If you are interested in this, please RSVP by 9/10/18 to 24@osu.edu to receive log in information.

FUTURE WORKSHOP: Saturday, November 10, 2018; 1-2:30 p.m. Ag Admin Auditorium.

  • More In-Depth Session-Ideal for 2+ year completion of the form (or those who have worked quite a bit on their form for the first year).  It will offer work stations and coaches available to help attendees with already started or completed achievement forms.

We will discuss Junior Achievement Forms (ages 8-13 as of 1/1/2019) from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and Ohio 4-H Achievement Forms (ages 14-18 as of 1/1/2019) from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Fairfield County youth excel at the 2018 Ohio 4-H Poultry Judging Contest!

Three Fairfield County youth participated in the 2108 Ohio 4-H Poultry Judging Contest on August 4th in the Senior Division: Caden Sweeney, Sergei Weidner, and Cullen Hughes.

Congrats to Caden for placing 1st overall senior individual! The team placed 7th in the senior division.

National Cattlemen’s Scholarship for Graduate Students – due 9/14/2018

The W.D. Farr Scholarship is national in scope and will be awarded to two outstanding students pursuing graduate degrees in animal science, environmental science (water) or agriculture. The winner of the scholarship will be strongly encouraged to participate in NCBA activities. The students must also reflect a drive for success and leadership in the tradition of W.D. Farr.

The National Cattlemen’s Foundation will begin accepting applications on August 8, 2018. Applications must be submitted by midnight Central Time on Sept. 14, 2018. Scholarship winners will be announced at the 2019 Cattle Industry Annual Convention in New Orleans, LA, and will be encouraged to attend. Expenses will be paid including conference registration, air fare (if applicable) and hotel accommodations.

Conditions of Eligibility

  • Applicant must be enrolled as a graduate student in a Master’s or PhD program at an accredited institution of higher learning for the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Applicant must demonstrate a commitment to a career in the beef industry through classes, internships or life experience.
