Ralph H. Grimshaw Scholarship – due 6/30/2018

The Ralph Grimshaw Scholarship is awarded annually by the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association. The scholarship is given in honor of Ralph H. Grimshaw. Mr. Grimshaw, a leader, an educator, and a friend of the sheep industry truly believed in the education of our youth of our industry.

The Ralph Grimshaw Scholarship is awarded annually by The Ohio Sheep Improvement Association. The scholarship is given in honor of Ralph H. Grimshaw. Mr. Grimshaw, a leader, an educator, and a friend of the sheep industry truly believed in the education of our youth of our industry.

Funding for scholarships comes from the Silent Auction at the Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium and private donations by Ohio Sheep Farmers to the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Fund.


Applicant Qualifications:

  1. Applicant must be a resident of Ohio.
  2. Parents of applicant (or applicant) must be a member in good standing with the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association.
  3. Applicant must be a high school graduate or higher at the time of application, with preference given to students pursing agricultural degrees.
  4. Applicant must be between the ages of 17 and 22.
  5. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  6. Selected finalists must appear for an interview with the Committee on Saturday, July 29, 2017.

Applicants may reapply annually. Recipients may receive the Ralph H Grimshaw Scholarship only once.

Letters of Recommendation: Must provide three (3) letter references; one (1) personal, one (1) professional, one (1) industry. Letters may not be written by the applicant, anyone under 21 years of age, or anyone related to the applicant or serving as a legal guardian. Contact information (at least one phone number) should be included for each reference.

Questions: Please answer the following questions. (Limit your responses to 200 words or less)

  1. Discuss your school, community, and sheep related activities, including family involvement, 4-H and/or FFA involvement, sheep association membership, and other activities relating to the sheep industry.
  2. Explain the contributions that Ralph H. Grimshaw, the person for which this scholarship is named after made to the Ohio Sheep Industry? What roles did he have in the Ohio Sheep Industry?
  3. Answer the following, “Why I believe in the future of the sheep industry…”
  4. Answer the following.(250 words) Recently the American Sheep Industry has initiated a “Let’s Grow” Program. In Ohio last year we did experience sheep industry growth. There are many different segments of sheep production in Ohio which have been successful in marketing sheep, lambs, and wool.

Identify two (2) segments of the Ohio sheep industry that have experienced the most significant growth in the last few years, explain why you believe that these two segments have had “growth” as compared to the other segments of sheep production.

Describe one (1) segment of sheep production that you would like to become involved in to have a successful and profitable sheep operation in Ohio. Include the type of sheep to be produced and desired genetic traits, labor, facilities, utilization of feedstuffs, and marketing goals in your descriptions.
