Attention Teens! Be an Ohio 4-H Event Youth Assistant (4HEYA) – Applications due 5/15/2018

Ohio 4-H teens will have a new opportunity for 2018—the 4-H Event Youth Assistant (4HEYA). Even though these applications are not due until May 15th, 2018, we wanted to share information with you about this now! Here is a basic overview of the opportunity:

  • What: 4-H Event Youth Assistant (4HEYA)
  • Who: Individuals age 13-18 (as of January 1 of the year of application) and have at least 1 year prior 4-H experience.
  • Time Frame: Apply by May 15, selection, training, service to Ohio State Fair, and evaluation. Complete responsibilities by August 31, 2018.

Requirements (in addition to application/selection process):

  • Training-Must attend one of the options for training (July 10 or July 19)
  • Events-Must work a minimum of 3 events at the Ohio State Fair; may work more if desired
  • Program Fee: $25/person for first year members; $10 for 2nd or more year member
  • Teens Receive: 4HEYA Polo & name tag; Ohio State Fair admission, parking ticket, and meal ticket(s); Optional State Fair housing in the Rhodes Center (if desired); Experience of working events at the Ohio State Fair; Opportunity to enhance leadership skills and be involved in the State 4-H program!

Ohio Soybean Council Foundation Scholarship Applications due 1/12/2018

The Ohio Soybean Council Foundation is pleased to offer $44,000 in scholarships to undergraduate and graduate Students for the 2018-2019 academic year. Scholarships are available to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing studies related to the soybean industry and the field of agriculture. The deadline to apply is January 12, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

Graduate scholarships: Three scholarships of up to $5,000 each are available to students who are enrolled as full-time graduate students at an Ohio college or university. Applicants must be conducting research in bioproducts, biotechnology, biobased materials, bioengineering, biopolymers or a related field, and must be focused on advancing the soybean industry. Applicants must have proof of legal residency in the U.S.

4-H Advisors needed!

Fairfield County is looking for adults 18 and over to become 4-H Advisors.  In particular, we are in need of additional advisors in the Pickerington and Canal Winchester areas, but will accept applications from all over the county!

How do you become and advisor?  Complete the application, get your fingerprints done and Leslie will schedule an interview with you.  Applications are due to our office by February 1, 2018 to be considered.  The official 4-H Advisor Volunteer position description is listed below.

Position Title: 4-H Club Advisor
General Purpose:
  • Serve as a liaison between the county Extension office/county 4-H professional and 4-H members, their parents and other volunteers with regard to 4-H club programs.
  • Secure, complete, and submit club organization/enrollment materials, and other requested materials to the county Extension office by the stated deadline.
  • Plan, organize, and possibly teach meaningful educational experiences to help youth grow and reach their fullest potential.
  • Support 4-H professionals, volunteers and members in conducting meaningful educational experiences to help youth grow and reach their fullest potential.
  • Inform and encourage members, parents, and other volunteers to actively participate in appropriate 4-H opportunities.

Columbus Blue Jackets (CBJ) to host Mental Health Awareness Day 12/5/2017

We are excited to share that The Columbus Blue Jackets (CBJ) is hosting a Mental Health Awareness Day on Tuesday, December 5th, 2017! This day will feature a free suicide prevention training and messaging to promote suicide prevention and positive mental health during the 7:00pm match against the New Jersey Devils (NJD)! As part of this Mental Health Awareness Day, OSPF has been chosen to receive $10-$20 of each ticket sale in donations, and to host a suicide prevention awareness booth at the Columbus Blue Jackets—New Jersey Devils match!

Individuals can take part in a short 45 minute Suicide Prevention Training from 5:30 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. at Nationwide Arena (directly prior to the 7:00 p.m. hockey game)! The suicide prevention training will be provided by Barb Smith, the Executive Director of Survivors of Suicide and an ASIST Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Master Trainer. This gatekeeper training is appropriate for any adult in Ohio!

Please show your support for positive mental health and the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation by sharing the attached flier with your contacts, signing up to take part in the gatekeeper training prior to the hockey game, AND purchasing tickets to the CBJ-NJD match on December 5th!
