Ohio State Fair Clothing Days – UPDATES!

For those 4-H members and families attending the Ohio State Fair for clothing/sewing projects next week, here are a few updates!

The State 4-H Fashion Board will be hosting a Clothing and Backpack Drive during Clothing Days Judging. They are asking participants to consider bringing ONE gently used backpack with some gently used clothing inside of it. Garments that are needed are: shorts, dress pants, jeans, coats, or closed-toed shoes. Items will be given to the Moeller Middle School (Columbus Public) and Maize Elementary (Columbus Public), and the New Life UMC Free Clothing Store. Participants will need to carry these items through fair security, so we ask that if participants would like to give more than one backpack of gently used items, they find a location locally.

The State 4-H Fashion Board has also encouraged counties to participate in a Dress A Girl Around the World work day. Information will be given to all participants at the Ohio State Fair. http://www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com/

Pickerington Clovers Support the Ronald McDonald House

On July 15th, 2017, members of the Pickerington Clovers 4-H Club conducted their community service event at the Ronald McDonald House. The club donated approximately 300 gently used books to the Ronald McDonald House Library. Their book drive, started by a Pickerington Clover 4-H member, was a great success! Additionally, the club gave 135 snack packs for families to enjoy during their stay. The Pickerington Clovers were given a tour of the facility and were told how much their donations were needed and appreciated. Thank you Pickerington Clovers 4-H Club Members on extending hour hands to larger service!

Fairfield County Represented at 4-H Leadership Washington Focus!

Fairfield County youth, Gabriella Schumacher and Hannah Henry, along with 4-H Program Assistant, Sue Suttles, attended 4-H Leadership Washington Focus in Washington D.C. the week of July 17th, 2017.

Leadership Washington Focus (LWF) is a 4-H leadership program for youth entering grades 7 through 9. The program will take place at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center, just 1 mile from the Washington, D.C. border. For more than 50 years, thousands of 4-H’ers have participated in our high school program, Citizenship Washington Focus and now we are happy to introduce its precursor for middle school 4-H’ers, LWF. Middle school 4-H delegates will:

  • Build confidence in their ability to motivate and direct others in meaningful action
  • Practice effective communication with others through group discussion and public speaking
  • Work with others to create and accomplish goals
  • Develop an understanding of their own personal leadership style
  • Exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other 4-H’ers from across the nation.
  • Experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop of Washington, D.C.

Participants will enjoy:

  • Motivational speakers and educational workshops that increase individual leadership capability and build lifetime skills for success
  • Activities that encourage and form new lasting friendships with other 4-H youth
  • An enthusiastic staff of young adults that work directly with them

Participants are immersed in the culture and history of our nation through on-site workshops at D.C.’s most spectacular sights.

One of the week’s signature events, called “Night View,” is a spectacular evening tour where delegates will reflect on the different types of leadership conveyed through the symbolism of our national monuments and memorials.

To be selected as a Fairfield County delegate, 4-Hers should complete either the Ohio Achievement Form (4-H age 14-18)  or Junior Achievement Form (4-H age 8-13). Forms will be due to the Extension Office in early January 2018.

Don’t let Swine FLU ruin your Fair!

As you’ve likely heard by now, the H3N2 flu was confirmed in swine on Thursday at the Clinton County Fair. This is the same strain that was of concern in 2012. Here’s an update on the Clinton County situation: http://ocj.com/2017/07/swine-flu-found-at-clinton-co-fair/

To date, this is the only confirmed case of H3N2 (swine flu) in Ohio this year. Those of you who were involved in the swine industry at any level back in 2012 will recall that bio-security was a point of emphasis then, and remains today, in preserving the health of both the swine industry and the people who come in contact with it. Of concern is the fact that influenza or “flu” occasionally can be transmitted from people to pigs and pigs to people.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that may cause outbreaks of flu in Continue reading

State Fair Packets are available for pickup

Summer judging is complete! All state fair packets are now available for pickup.  If you look at the judging results here and see a * by your name, then you are a state fair delegate!

We thank everyone for their patience as we utilized the 4-H online system for scheduling judging appointments.  Monday was our first day of appointments, and started off a bit rough, but we managed to catch up and get back on track.  Once Monday was complete, the rest of the week was more on time, and went better.  Thursday’s rain- Wow!  – THANK YOU to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends that brought the clothing members to their judging.  We never expected that much rain and flooding to occur causing road closures and detours.  Everyone arrived safely and judging was completed.  The Style Review Thursday evening was just as challenging for some to get to Liberty Union High School.  We appreciate everyone’s patience this week.

If you have suggestions or comments regarding summer judging (scheduling, time of day, amount of time spent with your child, etc.) please let Leslie know.  We are always looking for ways to improve our 4-H’ers experiences.

Emma Newell Attends 4-H Global Network Summit in Canada!

Ohio is well-represented this week at the 2017 Global 4-H Network Summit in Ottawa, Canada. Here’s Ohio 4-H’er and Ohio Teen Leadership Council member Emma Newell from Fairfield County being interview by the CBC television network!

4-H Around the World – From the Americas to Europe to Africa to Asia, 4-H builds youth leaders and provides a sense of belonging. As one of the largest youth organizations in the world, 4-H is investing in young people today to grow a brighter future. 4-H offers practical skill building activities, meaningful leadership roles and partnerships with caring adult volunteers. These three elements create a unique experience that equips young people for success in the future. In fact, according to a longitudinal study, 4-H youth attain higher educational achievement and are three times more likely to actively contribute to their communities.
