Mis Amigos (AKA The other resident directors)

For a study abroad trip to run smoothly, you need dependable and talented resident directors (RDs).

This year, I get to work with two great colleagues, Dr. Tania Burgos-Hernandez and Ricardo Zamaripa. I’ve been friends with Ricardo since I started working in at OSU in 2011 and advocated for him to join me on this trip with his dept leadership. I met Tania via another faculty member and she graciously accepted the RD position.

Y’all, these two have been a true godsend for our group. I needed RDs who were fluent in Spanish and able to handle our packed itinerary with humor and patience. They connected well with the students, have shared their experiences working on farms and provided interpreting in the airport, stores and restaurants.

Prior to this class they had never met and watching them instantly connect has been wonderful. I’m enjoying hearing them chat in Spanish seeing how important it is to have a colleague who shares a language and culture with you which creates a sense of belonging and connectedness

Having them with us, has allowed our guide some breathing room when dealing with logistics for the group and of course, we’ve enjoyed laughs and great conversation. Only three days in and I’m excited for the days ahead knowing I have two amazing RDs with me.
