The Clermont County Organizational Leadership Academy is currently compiling a list of those interested in participating in the Fall 2017 program.

Leadership! It is a basic fundamental need for any organization to perform at its best. And whether you want to learn more about public service or have thought about becoming more involved in your community, participating in a formal leadership development program may be helpful.

OSU Extension has been involved in such programs for over half a century and recent research shows such programs make a difference. Currently, OSU Extension Clermont County is working to address the needs of local elected officials and appointees of local government committees, zoning and planning commissions, school boards or task forces. The Clermont County Organizational Leadership Academy (CCOLA) includes eight, weekly two-hour workshops involving foundational principles of organizational leadership and decision-making tools enabling participants to learn more about their leadership style and those of others. It also provides opportunities to explore effective strategies for team-building, conducting effective meetings, communicating with citizens and media, managing conflict and building sustainable communities.

The components of the CCOLA can also be customized to fit a specific organization for hands-on training. The workshops below are available on single-session basis in addition to the multi-session Academy format. The sessions are:

  • Public Officials and Public Service: Build a framework for improving your tenure and service in public office. Topics include Duties and Responsibilities of Public Officials, Codes of Ethics, Standards of Conduct, Conflict of Interest, and Open Meetings Laws/Executive Sessions.
  • Team Building: Explore the principles for building effective working relationships with others, with organizations or local governments. Learn more about these relationships with Real Colors ®.
  • Conducting Effective Meetings and Decision Making: The goal for every public official is to “make good decisions.” What is a good decision?  How do we make them? Learn the most effective techniques to conducting effective meetings as well as decision-making processes.
  • Communicating and Working with Citizens and the Media: How can you develop positive and effective working relationships with all community residents, as well as with media representatives? Polish your skills for building effective relationships, while engaging community residents and improving media relations.
  • Building Sustainable Communities: Explore the relationships between growth, development, environment, ecology, social structures and the civic culture. Learn how to build sustainable communities in the areas you serve.
  • Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution: Learn how to work through difficult situations by developing conflict and dispute resolution skills needed to create strong, lasting collaborations.
  • Leadership Skills and Styles: Do you know your leadership style? Do you know that understanding leadership styles and types can help improve  interpersonal relationships and the effectiveness of your organization(s)? Gain skills to improve the operations and effectiveness of your governing body and your personal decision-making.
  • Intergovernmental Relations: Opportunities and Challenges for Cooperation:Explore Ohio law pertaining to opportunities and limitations for intergovernmental agreements and cooperative arrangements. Invest in opportunities to cooperate with others.

A community member who wants to learn more about public service? Have you ever considered exploring leadership development, but not sure how to begin? Have you thought about becoming involved civically in the community? Are you looking for somewhere to get basic leadership information? If so, the Clermont County Organizational Leadership Academy may be just what you are looking for.

OSU Extension Clermont County is offering a program designed for elected officials from county, municipal, and township governments, and appointed individuals serving on local government committees, zoning and planning commissions, school boards or task forces. The purpose is to build and enhance existing foundational principles of the organizational leadership and decision-making toolkit of public officials. The Academy offered by OSU Extension Clermont County includes eight, two-hour workshops held weekly. Extension Educators will provide a framework for principles and practices to improve your tenure and service in public office. The educators will allow participants to explore team-building strategies to build effective working relationships among others. From conducting effective meetings, communicating with citizens and media, conflict management, and leadership styles to building sustainable communities, participants will gain valuable foundational principles for their toolkit.

OSU Extension is offering a program designed for elected officials from county, municipal, and township governments, and appointed individuals serving on local government committees, zoning and planning commissions, school boards or task forces.  The purpose of the program is to build and enhance existing foundational principles of the organizational leadership and decision-making toolkit of public officials.  The Academy offered by OSU Extension Clermont County includes eight, two hour workshops to be held weekly.  Extension Educators will provide a framework for principles and practices to improve your tenure and service in public office.   The educators will allow participants to explore team building strategies to build effective working relationships among others.  Course offerings include: conducting effective meetings, communicating with citizens and media, conflict management, and leadership styles to building sustainable communities. The Clermont County Organizational Leadership Academy will be conducted in Clermont County by the OSU Extension Office. Workshops will be held weekly at University of Cincinnati – East Campus, 1981 James E. Sauls Sr. Dr., Batavia, Ohio on Wednesday evenings, beginning January 25, 2017 through March 15, 2017.  Workshops run from 6:00pm – 8:00pm each week with dinner beginning at 6:00pm.

The cost of the course is $200 per person.  Along with the vast resources and knowledge gained, participants will receive a notebook of all resource materials, dinner, and refreshments.  Registrations are now being accepted.  Individuals interested in the program may contact the Clermont County Extension office at (513) 732-7070. OSU Extension Annual Conference

img_4959Ohio State University Extension Annual Conference is being held December 6-7, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio. Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, Gigi Neal, Community Development Program Coordinator, Trevor Corboy, and Family and Consumer Sciences Educator, Margaret Jenkins are in attendance. At the Conference, the three will be presenting a research-based educational poster on LOOK to Clermont. LOOK is a youth leadership program for juniors and seniors from across Clermont County. Students attend ten monthly session to build their leadership skills while earning college credit through The Ohio State University Academy and the University of Cincinnati Clermont College. Poster abstracts are peer reviewed and viewed by OSU Extension colleagues from across the state. Learn more and view the poster here.

4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

4-H is a non-formal educational, youth development program offered to individuals age 5 and in kindergarten to age 19. Ohio 4-H youth development reaches more than 240,000 youth each year – helping kids “learn by doing” through hands-on activities.

All 4-H programs focus on active involvement and quality experiences which stimulate lifelong learning of values and skills. 4-H members learn valuable lessons in leadership, communication and collaboration while increasing their knowledge in math, science, technology and a variety of other topics.

4-H creates fun while learning in a variety of ways. Kids can participate in 4-H through community clubs, camps, in-school and after-school activities, and summer programs. They increase their self-confidence and personal life skills while learning about specific subjects – anything from animals or computers to public speaking, cooking, art, gardening and environmental sciences, just to name a few project topics.

SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP-Ed) is a free nutrition education and obesity prevention program serving low-income adults and youth. It is funded by the Food Nutrition Service (FNS) branch of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). SNAP-Ed operates in 52 states and territories, and its focus audience is individuals and families eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as food stamps). SNAP-Ed facilitates voluntary adoption of healthy food and physical activity choices and other good nutrition-related behaviors. In Ohio, SNAP-Ed has developed as a partnership between the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services and Ohio State University Extension.

Aquaponics: How to Do it Yourself Webinar – May 18 at 3 p.m.:

5-18-16 Aquaponics,The National Aquaculture Association, North Central Regional Aquaculture Center and United States Aquaculture Society are offering a webinar to help those exploring the world of aquaponics to design and manage

a system that will produce food for the home or can be scaled up as a commercial operation. Participants will better understand aquaponic production methods, systems, operational management and products. Additionally, realities of economic viability and food safety and environmental sustainability will be discussed. Aquaponics provides producers and environmentally conscious way to produce and sell more U.S. farm-raised seafood. This is an opportunity to learn more about U.S. aquaculture and how it meets your need to provide safe, sustainable, local seafood for your customers.
