Call811.com provides a 5 step guide to safe digging that could help prevent a dangerous incident this farming season:

1. Notify your One Call center by making an online request or calling 811 2-3 days prior to digging

2. Wait 2-3 days (varies by state) for affected utility operators to respond to the ticket

3. Confirm all utility operators have responded to the request and the marks are accurate – if you see aboveground indications of buried utilities (like a utility marker or vent pipe), but no marks, call 811 so the utility operator can be notified

4. Respect the locate marks

5. Dig carefully, keeping in mind if you have to dig near the locate marks, to hand dig to expose to utility (state laws generally prohibit using mechanized equipment within 18″-24″ of a marked utility)
