Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Although, I always imagined myself participating in a study abroad program, I now realize my college career is flying by and I may not have time to do so. However, my coursework in my French minor has been oriented at global awareness, and I hope to live abroad for the year between graduation and when I plan to start graduate school.
Original Inquiry: For my first two years at the Ohio State University I was a research assistant for a professors project which involved both my Linguistics major and my French minor.  I hope to get another research project with a professor in the Computational Linguistics section of my department which will hopefully lead to a thesis paper.
Academic Enrichment: I have worked hard while scheduling to take rigorous coursework. For example my core Linguistics major class is taught at the graduate level, and I have taken on two minors.  I also work hard to take diverse coursework beyond what is required for the Honors & Scholars general education guidelines.  Examples of this include my continued participation in the University band, taking a video production class, and complimenting my Computational Linguistics path with an additional coding class.
Leadership Development: I have always felt comfortable in leadership positions, however I have not had many specific experiences in that role so far in college.  I have tried out a few different campus organizations and recently joined the ski team which I think provides a good opportunity for me to take on a leadership role.
Service Engagement: I have not participated in service yet at the University.  I think its a really good idea and I have thoroughly enjoyed my previous service experiences.  I think my best plan is to get involved with service on my own time such as volunteering at a soup kitchen on nights that I have free time so that it is easier to do some good, even though I have a busy schedule!

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

Hard to believe this was a whole year ago!

Hard to believe this was a whole year ago!

Hi!

My Name is Sarah Ewing.  I was born and have lived my whole life in New Hampshire, more specifically in Hopkinton.  I spent twelve years in school, and graduated with, roughly the same 63 students in my class.  I have always been a huge Ohio State football fan because of my dad, so choosing the university was somehow comfortable.  However, I’d be lying if I didn’t say the thought of having a grade over a hundred times bigger than I’m used to scares me.

I have found myself to be a quick learner.  Memorizing and remembering have never been a problem for me.  I worked as a waitress this summer and had a fun time testing my memory by choosing not to write down any orders (which usually worked out well).  I can imagine someone reading this post right now, who doesn’t have the same luck with memory, groaning.  Let me tell you; my gift is a curse.  I am not one who has had to study much before, and that has come back to bite me.  By the way when I say, “had to study” I mean I haven’t chosen to, and for the most part done well.  However there have been wake-up calls.  Most specifically math class.  I absolutely love math; I have never felt so accomplished as when I understood a new topic in calculus.  But staring at my teacher knowing I have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about is the most frustrated I have ever felt.

My number one goal for myself as I start school, is to study even when I don’t think I need to.  Hopefully, I will think I need to though, because if there’s one thing I’m looking for out of my college classes it’s a healthy challenge.  I’m especially excited to be a part of the honor’s community because I am a social person.  Being in a community of intelligent, driven students is going to help me make the kind of friends I really want: friends who will want to have fun, but also hopefully know we’re spending thousands to be at OSU for a reason; to learn.
