A general survey is a systematic assessment of an individual’s health status. The purpose of the general survey is to gain an overall impression of an individual’s state of health and to identify potential areas of concern. It is important to note that the general survey should be performed in a systematic, objective and organized manner; any abnormal findings will warrant additional, more detailed and comprehensive assessment. Components of a general survey are primarily observational, and include:
- Assessment of physiologic stability
- Observation of appearance, behavior, and mobility
- Focused assessment of mental status
- Measurement of vital signs
