“Alex Buono’s Visual Storytelling 2”

Recently, three of our team members attended the “Alex Buono’s Visual Storytelling 2” workshop in Cincinnati. Alex is the Director of Photography for the Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts unit. Basically, anything you see on the show that’s not considered live, he’s responsible for shooting. In his workshop, he highlighted the equipment he uses per project, he demonstrated several lighting techniques, and he even displayed the mistakes he’s made over the years. Overall, our team really enjoyed the workshop and we will be applying it to the video projects we create.

Informed Consents In-Service Training

This in-service training for the College of Dentistry on 9/8 was presented live to about 350 faculty, staff and students. We setup a 2 camera live switch recording as well as a live feed straight into an overflow room. We used both Postle Hall auditoriums.

Exterior B-Roll Shots

Perfect weather means it’s time for us to go outside and shoot some b-roll. What is b-roll? B-roll is defined as supplemental or alternative footage intercut with the main shot in an interview. Typically, the more b-roll you have in your project, the better. These shots not only help tell the story, but they also add visuals to your video, and help us cover up noticeable editing cuts. Today we went around the medical center campus and shot a variety of exterior shots to be used one day in your videos!

“JP Soars & The Red Hots”

This was our team’s first of many Heather Pick Music Program recordings in the new James. This program is designed to record and broadcast live musical performances up to the patient rooms, in addition having them in an on-demand video catalogue for browsing. Various bands, like the pictured “JP Soars & The Red Hots” will be stopping by as they’re in Columbus on tour, just to make everyone’s day happier.  We’re still working on getting the broadcasting portion up and running. We’re getting close!

FEATURE: Lavaliere Microphone Placement

By Jason Fischer | AV Support Analyst

Fischer adjusted portrait

When it comes to recording videos, audio quality is just as important as video quality. Placing your microphone correctly is very important to make sure you look AND sound your best. Here are a couple quick tips on adjusting your lavaliere microphone.

1) Make Sure the Mic is Facing Up –  One of the most frequent issues I see with new users is that they place the mic upside down, which is picking up their waistline and not their voice.

2) The Mic Clip is Adjustable – There are five adjustable positions. Please realize that you can always adjust the microphone clip 180 degrees, to ensure the mic is facing your mouth correctly.

YP4H – Celebrate Employee Wellness Month

In this project, we worked with the Your Plan for Health team to create an inspirational video that is used for June’s Employee Health Month, letting faculty and staff know that the university supports them in their journal towards a healthy lifestyle. The goal was to capture group activities while telling the story of “Together” when thinking about YP4H.

TAVR Video Promo

This video project tied in directly with the SHD Conference posted below.  It promotes the TAVR surgery (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement), which was the featured surgery of the conference AND what we broadcasted live. This video features recruiting doctors from Lancaster, Ohio as well as an actual TAVR patient. It was played during breaks at the conference.

SHD Conference 2015

The Structural Heart Disease Conference is one of our team’s larger-scaled annual conferences. This year, the conference was held over at the Ohio Union. Our team was responsible for setting up, testing, and connecting a live surgery broadcast from Cath Lab 5 (Ross Heart Hospital) over to the Ohio Union. The connection is 2-way, meaning the audience in the Ohio Union can directly communicate with the doctors as they operate on the patient.

We’re happy to announce the broadcast AND surgery went well!

France Foundation Video Project

The France Foundation was our external (non-osu) client for this video project. They guided us to shoot a series of videos that depicted patient and physician interactions in an exam room. During this shoot, we used two patient actors and Amy Sturm as the physician. We shot this in Exam Room 14 of the Clinical Skills Center in the basement of Prior Hall. This larger space allowed our team the freedom to move and setup our gear.
