Patterning and Abstractions

Analogous Green Mandala
Complementary Blue/Orange Mandala

Project Statement

In this project, I created abstractions from images of natural things and man-made things, arranging them in ways that created unique patterns to create a Mandala. From there, I used two separate color palettes to further create depth and harmony across my composition. By overlapping shapes and establishing a hierarchy with scale, some shapes sprout in the composition whereas others may be more subtle. My goal was to create a flower-esq composition that feels layered and harmonious all around it and I believe I accomplished that.

Reflection

This project felt like it took a century. From the abstractions to creating my first iterations, I felt really comfortable creating ideas and experimenting with different patterns that utilized either line or shape and how those two things can create the harmony I was looking for or make things look messy. The fact that everything was digital was very convenient and allowed me to work on this everywhere I went. However, I did also learn what the iPads are capable of handling. Four Mandala all in one file tend to get crazy and I indeed learned this the hard way. I feel I did a great job in activating my principle of choice; Harmony. My composition feels unified and whole with color aiding the depth and layers I wanted to create using overlapping forms as a part of a visual hierarchy I intended to create.
