Reflection
When I think about all my coursework that I have undergone through the Master of Learning Technologies program, I now see and understand that each course was building to this moment. From conducting a needs analysis learned from ESLTECH6278 to creating deliverables enriched with sound pedagogy from ESLTECH7297, I was extremely excited to share all that I learned through this program in one final product. Throughout this practicum experience, I was able to listen, create, and share based on the information gathered from various stakeholders who were unfamiliar with instructional design and project management theory.
Although this product was originally designed at the request from the technological staff within my district, my final product presentation was delivered to the building principals from the three elementary buildings. What I did not realize at the onset of this product was that I would have a chance to take what started as an optional resource for my colleagues and transform it into how the entire district introduces and teaches iPad care, usability, and digital citizenship. The original client felt so strongly about the work that I had completed that she had requested I deliver the same presentation to the building principals in hopes of convincing them to implement the program district wide.
The presentation lasted nearly twenty minutes with the question and answer portion lasting roughly twenty minutes more. The principal team loved the work that they saw, and unanimously decided to implement this pilot district wide. The team also requested similar deliverables for 2nd and 3rd grade iPad care, usability, and digital citizenship. Furthermore, the principals requested that new updates could happen modeled after this program to demonstrate how parents can use our learning management system.
Looking back at the overall success of this presentation and product development, I see the two biggest variables as ongoing and constant communication with my client and a heavy emphasis to fully understand the scope of the project in the planning phase. The building principals were both appreciative and impressed at the number of stakeholders involved in this process, which is something that does not always happen in a large district. Being able to take what I learned as theory in the MLT program and deliver it into application for my current employer has been an invaluable experience that I believe helps open the door for more instructional design work in the future.
It is worth noting that the survey shared with my client yielded high marks in all phases. For me, the strongest indicator of success came from one individual present during the final Zoom presentation. This individual immediately reached out to me at the end of the presentation to share the simple quote, “That, my friend, was you <3.” After working tirelessly for the past couple of months, this is one experience that I know I will never forget!
