Source: Local School in New Zealand gets on board with encouraging girls

Background: This is a recent article from Mastercard which describes a local school and its efforts to getting girls involved in STEM.

Strengths: The article was just released in 2017 so it is up to date. The article also seems unbiased as it provides different viewpoints and links to what forums and researchers are saying. They also include a decent amount of stats on the topic. It also provides more information about Mastercard and what they are doing as well to help with the initiative of getting girls involved.

Weaknesses: This is about a school in New Zealand so it doesn’t necessarily relate to the USA and our efforts to getting girls involved in engineering.

Source: Verizon gives tips on inspiring her mind

Background: Verizon recently came out with a campaign called #inspirehermind in which it encourages girls to get involved in STEM. The video portrays what it may be like for girls to grow up with brothers (who are supposed to do all the heavy work) and how many girls are interested in STEM but don’t pursue it.

Strengths: The content doesn’t seem to be biased but instead portrays what it could be like to be interested in something and not pursue it. Verizon simply stated facts. The video also came out in 2016 so it is up to date.

Weaknesses: The video itself doesn’t provide information about the author or where they got the stats from which could lead to skepticism from someone. However, if you go to the website, you can find the information about the videos.
