Canada Ah!

Canada: The moose, the people, the maple syrup. What’s not to love? I was able to spend my first Ohio State fall break over the border in one of the coolest cities in North America. I was able to travel to Toronto, Ontario through the International Affairs Scholars Program to spend a few short but activity filled days seeing sights and learning about Canadian culture and politics. This being my first time in Canada, I was incredibly excited for all the touristy things like going to the CN tower, visiting Casa Loma, and exploring the never ending exhibits in the Royal Ontario Museum. However, my favorite parts of the trip were the events that weren’t planned. On or breaks I was able to explore the famous Yonge Street, swing dance for the first time, and experience the downtown underground PATH walkway system.

this visit was a taste for what Canada has to offer. I’ll be returning sometime in the near future.There’s no doubts a-boot it.  Hopefully again in the company of friends and with a  spirits of adventure.

About Me

My name is Deborah Eshun and I am a first year here at the Ohio State University. I intend on majoring in Political Science and minoring in Human Rights through the College of Arts and Sciences. On campus I am an International Affairs Scholar through the University Honors & Scholars Program. Through this program I hope to learn more about different cultures, study abroad, and expand my definition of what it means to be a global citizen.  As the daughter of an Ghanaian immigrant, I have always been fascinated with different cultures. Having grown up with two different cultural perspectives has fostered an appreciation and love for difference in our society that I hope to add to my career in the future. Along with being an International Affairs Scholar, I  am a new member of the Collegiate Council of World Affairs, the Black Student Association, and the Alexander Hamilton Society among other clubs and activities on campus. I also work in the 18th Avenue Library as a circulation assistant, allowing me to do public service work in a practical way while still on campus.

While I don’t know my exact career plan, I do know that I would like to be involved in an international organizations aimed at non-profit service, possibly working in Ghana. I have confidence that I will be able to find my exact career plan in my time at the University. While I am here I would also like to travel, learn, and grow as a person. I can’t wait to learn what OSU has to offer!

Year in Review

Wow. What can I say? My freshman year at the Ohio State University has come to a rapid close…almost. As I type this, I am packing my bags to participating in a Maymester study abroad program. I will conclude my freshman year in Cuba, studying race relations and indentity, the Cuban independance movements, and, the overall Cuban culture, all while brishin up on my Spanish. This event tops the upward trajectory of my freshman year and is the most exciting thing about my first year.

There are too many great memories to reount all in this one post but I would like to share the high lights.

High lights of freshman year:

Going to Toronto, Canada for the first time with International Affairs Scholars.

Spring Break in New Orleans by myself.

Working with Population Connection during their lobbying event in Washington D.C. focusing on global reproductive health.

Interned for my home distirict Senator in the Ohio Senate as well as completed the Internship program through the university.

As of right now, I have completed 105 college credits total.

Hosting the 1st anual Queer Person of Color (QPOC) talent show with the student organization SHADES.

These are just a few of the many accomplishments of this year. I have grown tremendously academically, but more so, I find my personal growth to be the notable. I hope to see the same level of growth and achievement in my undergraduate years to come.

This past Spring semester, I had the fortunate opportunity of being an intern for Senator Vernon Sykes, who represnets the 28th district of Ohio. Through this internship, I had direct contact with my home senator and the issues that impact the community I was born and raised in. From this experience, I have garnish new office skills, professionalisms, and a deeper understanding of the political process. I also made great friends with my coworkers and have been able to maintain our friendship outside of my being in the office.

Overall, this internship was an all encompassing and enriching experience that directly supliments my political science degree aspirations.
