Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

I plan on constructing an academic plan that satisfies each of the G.O.A.L.S. so that I achieve an elevated understanding of the world around me. Each aspect of my academic experience will, in turn, create an environment in which I can enhance my general education at Ohio State. The five goals, Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement have and will surface throughout my curriculum.

G: Global Awareness. I believe that my French minor will allow me to gain a greater understanding of the different cultures within the Francophone world. In correspondence with my French minor, I have joined the French club and the Polyglot Club. These two clubs have brought a greater connection between myself and the greater community of language learners at Ohio State. Additionally, I plan on studying abroad at some point throughout my academic career. Particularly, I am interested in the Global May Paris program, as well as a faculty-led program. My instruction in French will ultimately serve to further inform me on the francophone community throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

O: Original Inquiry. In my academic career at Ohio State, I plan on conducting academic research at some point. I have already completed an independent research project (unpublished, but still involved an IRB), so I am familiar with the research process, at least in the humanities. However, especially considering my Statistics major, I would like to involve myself in some research in the future. In addition, I believe I can further my “original inquiry” by taking high-level courses at Ohio State that align with my academic interests. These courses allow for a deep understanding of a topic; that, I believe I can expand upon in the future in my personal affairs.

A: Academic Enrichment. In the future, I am undecided in whether I wish to pursue some form of data analysis, academia, or even consulting. I believe that a degree in Statistics could lead a path to all of these jobs; but, my academic experiences at Ohio State will ultimately determine whether my professional goals shift. In general, I decided on a French minor in order to not only further my own personal interest in Francophone culture but to also quantifiably represent my dedication to the language.

L: Leadership Development. In the past, I saw myself in multiple leadership positions in high school; however, at the college level, I would like to deeply involve myself with a few student organizations in order to gain an intimate relationship with my peers and community. As a first-year, I feel like leadership opportunities are going to be hard to come by, particularly within the clubs I am involved, but I am looking toward the future.

S: Service Engagement. In my environmental humanities seminar, I am inspired to better the community through environmental activism. In turn, I wish to involve myself with community cleanups (cleaning the Olentangy, Scioto, etc.) and further educate the community. In my own personal activism, I am trying to involve myself in the zero-waste lifestyle, which is difficult as a college student. But, in general, I see myself furthering the community through my education here at Ohio State.

Throughout each of the G.O.A.L.S. of the honors program at Ohio State, I see myself enhancing my education and ultimately gaining a greater understanding of the world. And, through my education, I believe I will be more able to serve greater society.
