Lab 3 – Creative Design Rapid Prototyping

Week 4

Situation

In Lab 03: Creative Design Thinking, the team, created individual AEV designs in order to come together and create a consensus on an initial group design. Initially, members contemplated and sketched in silence during the “brainstorming” phase. Following this phase, the group members came together to discuss and create a design for the group that would encompass all the ideas of the team members. In the designs, the dimensions, materials, estimated weight, cost, etc. had to be listed in consideration. Though at this point only a rough sketch, the design finalized by the team will provide a cornerstone for how the project will continue forward. The design allows the team to have a basis to work around when creating the code, purchasing ad designing materials, or other troubleshooting issues.

Results and Analysis

Charles’ design used both a forward and reverse facing motor, hoping to see if it would make direction changes more efficient. Tom’s design was more focused on the aesthetic features of the AEV, modeling his design after the Millennium Falcon. Ian’s design incorporated a round nose, wings, and was modeled after a spaceship. Eric’s design was focused around being more compact and sleek for aerodynamic efficiency. When considering all the designs, some of the designs are more focused on practicality and effectiveness while others are more focused on style and appeal. While style may not be helpful in completing the scenario, it is important to consider the possible failure of the practical designs, should they prove to be too over complicated or inefficient. Overall the group consensus was to model the team design mostly after Tom’s draft. This decision was made to ensure that the design would not become over complicated as well as fitting with the theme of the project.

The general materials for the designs such as the Arduino, motors, propellers, etc. were consistent throughout the group, though each member does have some unique parts in addition. Charles’ design called for a uniquely cut body and wings as well as a cockpit windshield that would be purchased. Tom’s design featured a piece of material that would be placed over top the main body of the AEV to make it appear as the Millennium Falcon; he has materials for this already. Ian’s design would require special cut wings and rounded nose from the laser cutter. Eric’s design also requires special cut wings and body. No matter what design was decided upon, there would have to be either laser cut or store bought parts in addition.

Takeaways

  1.       AEV –  An initial team design was decided upon for the construction of the AEV
  2.       General – Use time more efficiently to get as much done as possible
