Preliminary R&D 5 : Concept Screening & Scoring

Deliverables:

1.) Concept Screening and Concept Scoring Spreadsheets

Concept Screening Matrix:

Concept Scoring Matrix:

2.) Reasonings and Results:

Reasoning for the Criteria Weights: The team decided that the most important factor in the AEV is safety. This was because the AEV is meant to be a transportation vehicle and people need to find it reliable. The second most important factor was efficiency as this would not be a cost effective project if it was not efficient. The last three were are weighted similarly, but still were important factors. Stability so the ride is comfortable, materials cost for cost effectiveness, and durability for up keep cost.

Reasoning for Concept Sketches:

Cade’s Concept Sketch: The design had overall safety  and durability(protection of battery and propellers) and a low weight aiding to efficiency and materials cost, but stability appeared to be a major concern due to the shape.

Ethan’s Concept Sketch: The design was large and spread out giving it good stability and safety. This also led to problems however as it would lower efficiency and increase materials cost.

Jacob’s Concept Sketch: With a wide base and safely situated components, this design was stable and safe. However the rectangular shape and large size led to an increase materials cost and decrease in efficiency.

Erin’s Concept Sketch: The design was simple and wide giving to good stability and low materials cost. Safety, durability, and efficiency were all just about as well as the reference design.

Team’s Concept Sketch: The design was made with safety and efficiency in mind. A large protective (yet light weight) cover protects the battery and slim design gave good efficiency and low materials cost. The slim design however made it less durable and stable.
