Progress Report Lab 5
Lab 5 focused on screening and scoring the various AEV concepts that Team K came up with. Our team used several criteria, including balance, minimal blockage, center of gravity, maintenance, durability, cost and environmental. The weights for each criteria is as follows: balanced(5%), minimal blockage(15%), center of gravity(10%), maintenance(25%), durability(15%), cost(20%), environmental(10%).
Results & Analysis
The criteria were ranked with a score from 1-5 and the only AEV’s that were tested were the model AEV and the AEV decided on by the team in the previous lab which will be referenced as Design A. The model AEV received a score of 3.4. It got a 2 in balanced, 5 in minimal blockage, 2 in center of gravity, 4 in maintenance, 3 in durability, 3 in cost, and 3 in environmental. Design A received a score of 4. It got a 5 in balanced, 3 in minimal blockage, 4 in center of gravity, 3 in maintenance, 5 in durability, 5 in cost, and 4 in environmental. With these results it was clear to the team that out of the model and Design A that Design A would be the better choice to move forward with. Team K did not test Design A on the test track with the scenario code because of time constraints. There was still tasks that needed to be finished from the previous lab and doing them meant that testing on the test track would need to be pushed back to next lab where we should have enough time.
Takeaways
General
- Creating criteria to objectively measure the competence of designs is integral to good engineering
- Grading as a group is a good way to resist bias towards certain designs
AEV
- Maintenance is an important aspect of the AEV because of all the transportation done with it.
- Nose cones or other 3d printable objects are not necessary for an efficient AEV.

Summary
This lab will focus on taking the Lab Proficiency Quiz along with preparing for the Oral Presentation by having completed the worksheet. The team will spend the lab recapping from previous labs and talking over how the AEV has progressed since then.
Weekly Goals
1) Update Project Portfolio
2) Complete Worksheet
3) Begin Preparation for CDR Oral Presentation
4) Confirm AEV Design
