Background
This is the world of Star Wars.
The Death Star, the space station of the galactic empire, is still under recovering while the rebel alliance is considering their next steps for war. The alliance is seeking for brand new technologies of a “monorail network system”(“Mission Concept Review”) which can transport R2D2 units to production plants of interceptor aircraft. The system would be constructed on remote planets, therefore, reducing the energy for operating this system and the construction costs would be the first priority.
Mission Goals
- Reducing energy cost as much as possible
- The vehicle should be able to overcome diverse geological conditions
- Operation convenience when carrying different cargo or other extreme situations
Track Description
- The track of the AEV is a closed-rectangle loop with its corners being four quarter circle with 4ft radius.
- The size of the outer track is 18ft * 28ft and of the inner track is 14ft * 24ft. (Figure 4.)
- On the left and right sides of each track, there is a gate system whose length is 22.5 ft.
- Two sensors are located on both terminates of each gate system. (Figure 5.)

Mission Descriptions
- Class divided into 26 groups which are assigned in two tracks. See Figure 3.
- Start: The AEV will start at the Drop-off area that is shown in the figure 4, note that the front wheel is just behind Mark1.
- Checking In : the AEV will traverse to the gate. In order to so this successfully, the AEV must trip the first sensor only and it takes 7.0 seconds for the gate to open after the sensor is activated. The gate will lock the sensor is the AEV gets too close to the gate and travel through the gate.
- The AEV is navigated to the cargo area and stop at it the pick up an R2-D2 the wait for 5.0 second until the cargo is all loaded.
- The AEV will travel back to the gate, note we need to make sure the AEV follow the rules as it was checking in.
- The AEV traverse to the drop-off area. To accomplish this successfully, both of the AEV’s wheels have to be in the Mark 2 and the starting point.
