The External Sensors Lab allowed the students to utilize the components of the external sensors hardware included in the Advance Energy Vehicle (AEV) kit and the program function calls associated with the sensors. In this lab, the students observed how the external sensors enabled the AEV to move within a measured distance on the track based on the written Arduino codes and function calls. The students also learned to test the orientation of the sensor using the “reflectanceSensorTest();” command on the Arduino software. The test was integral to ensure the AEV to correctly move in the right direction, and stop after travelling a specific distance on the track. This lab will allow the students to begin planning the necessary codes to operate the AEV in order to complete the specific scenarios given in the AEV’s Mission Concept Review. See executive summary below for more details of the lab.
