Analysis 3

This great film is composed by Shuan Tan, and it tells a story that the protagonist who had encountered a strange, homeless creature when he was collecting bottle tops on a beach and helped the Lost Thing find the way home in the end.

In the short film, there are only two major characters—the protagonist and the Lost Thing. In spite of the protagonist, the Lost Thing has a very typical personality which is childish and innocent. Yes, it is just a child, if we can ignore its strange appearance.

During the process of looking for the Lost Thing’s home, the protagonist found that no one actually know where it comes from. Moreover, when he took the Lost Thing to his house, his parents could not accept it because not only does it has a weird physical appearance, but also its acts make them stressful. Therefore, there is a suggestion that the Lost Thing actually expresses a kind of thing that does not belong to the numb adults and the numb society fulled of indifference.

After watched the 15 minus short film, there was kind of an unutterable sadness haunting with my mind. It is easy to know that the protagonist will never meet the Lost Thing again. The protagonist will continues his own life, and frequently become an adult as numb as the others because he eternally lose the Lost Thing which actually is the symbol of his innocence and curiosity. When the children grow up to become the adults, they probably will lost these kinds of things because of endless trivial affairs and dull monotony of life which are frequently numbing their pure mind.
