Analysis 1
In the first scene, the boy with a pair of glasses got off the train and took out a little brochure from his pocket. He looks like a nurd, a nurd who may notice unusual staff among usual staff. The brochure had all kinds of patterns of bottle tops on it. While he’s walking through his journey, he saw a “robotic crab” sit on the beach. There is plenty of dust covered on it. It had been lost for several years. He accidently woke up the Lost Thing and played with it. Even though, there were people passing by the Lost Thing everyday and no one noticed it. You could tell they lost the passion from the people’s eyes. Their eyes were hollow and numb. However, the happy time did not last long. The adults came to the beach and expelled them from there.
After they were banished, the boy brought the Lost Thing back home to his little storage room. Because in his parents’ point of view, the Lost Thing was strange and absurd. However, the first place that the boy would like to hide the Lost Thing was home. He thought his family would accept the existence of the Lost Thing. Usually the home was everyone’s shelter. In the film, the parents were like the numb workers on the beach, they could not accept unusual staff.
The Lost Thing could represent the creativity, naive minds and even the affective thinking. While the people were growing up, they gradually lost the natural instincts. Became people were considering how others think about them, so that they became more and more hypocritical.
Analysis 2
The movie “the lost thing” depict that a boy found an strange machine crab on the beach. he took the crab to home, but his family did not welcome that colossus, he try to find out where should the big crab belongs to and after struggle, he finally found a home to the crab and go back to home. From my perspective, the lost thing refer to the childhood.
The background of movie was gray and gloomy. The Director Shuan Tan tried to make the film very old faction, which give us an illusion that the film was produced many years ago. So many viewer’s childhood memory was awake. They recall what they did in childhood, rethink those naive behaviors which make them become abnormal. They may realize, just as the director wanted to convey by the movie, that those behaviors of abnormal and naive may be the most memorable and treasurable stuffs in adult’s lives, which had became unify by “mature thinking” and if we abandon that we will be deadly common.
Under bunch of relatives disagreement, the protagonist became one of the commoners at the end of film. That is a sad story. However, director convey that under social pressure the ending of normality seems to be irreversible.
Everybody born with a lost thing. the lost thing is strange and abnormal. Every one’s lost thing was unique. They kept the lost thing for many years. However, as they growing up, they gradually find it is strange to keep it. “ that stuff make people think you are naive” then they kept it at home, until their family complaint it and be angry of it. many friends abandon it. “you should also throw it to become mature” they throw it and become normal.
Analysis 3
This great film is composed by Shuan Tan, and it tells a story that the protagonist who had encountered a strange, homeless creature when he was collecting bottle tops on a beach and helped the Lost Thing find the way home in the end.
In the short film, there are only two major characters—the protagonist and the Lost Thing. In spite of the protagonist, the Lost Thing has a very typical personality which is childish and innocent. Yes, it is just a child, if we can ignore its strange appearance.
During the process of looking for the Lost Thing’s home, the protagonist found that no one actually know where it comes from. Moreover, when he took the Lost Thing to his house, his parents could not accept it because not only does it has a weird physical appearance, but also its acts make them stressful. Therefore, there is a suggestion that the Lost Thing actually expresses a kind of thing that does not belong to the numb adults and the numb society fulled of indifference.
After watched the 15 minus short film, there was kind of an unutterable sadness haunting with my mind. It is easy to know that the protagonist will never meet the Lost Thing again. The protagonist will continues his own life, and frequently become an adult as numb as the others because he eternally lose the Lost Thing which actually is the symbol of his innocence and curiosity. When the children grow up to become the adults, they probably will lost these kinds of things because of endless trivial affairs and dull monotony of life which are frequently numbing their pure mind.

What’s more, in the end of the film, the place the Lost Thing really belongs to is a kind of utopian world fulls of innocence and happiness. It clearly suggests that the Lost Thing actually is the symbol of the children’s simplicity. In the childhood, the children are generally having a mind fulls of innocence and curiosity. However, when the children grow up to become the adults, they probably will lost these kinds of things because of endless trivial affairs and dull monotony of life which are frequently numbing their pure mind.
