My name is Deepak Ramesh and I’m majoring in Mechanical Engineering at The Ohio State University. I took the English 1110 course because it was pre-requisite for my major and I also wanted to improve my writing skills because I consider it one of my weaknesses. I am from Richmond Heights, Ohio, which is about 10 minutes away from Cleveland. I knew about what Christopher Columbus achieved and why we celebrated him on the Monday of the second week of October but I didn’t really have an idea of how his life unfolded. When I was presented this project to research whether Columbus was a hero or villain, I was curious about why Columbus would be considered a villain. Thanks to the articles that I looked into to learn more about this topic, I gained a better understanding of this famous figure. I realized while he achieved many great things, like accidentally discovering the Americas when he was trying to a direct water route from Europe to Asia, the cost towards achieving these things outweigh the achievements. That’s why I believe the world should start to view as him a villain instead of a hero.
