Year in Review – Spring 2018

Throughout my two years at Ohio State, I have seen myself, as well as those around me, grow and develop their futures, whether it was the easy way or through tough love. When I started out my first semester at Ohio State, I had never taken public transportation, I was an athletic training pre-major, and I had been pursuing to continue my education in a doctorate of physical therapy program. However, as this year and semester have progressed, I have found that I have matured and changed in ways I could not have imagined a year ago. Since the beginning of this year, I had changed my major to be a pre-health information management and systems major, I had started taking the COTA bus almost everyday, and I had changed my plan for the future completely.

At the beginning of the year I had set my mind to better my academic record and to become more involved in the career field I wanted to some day enter as a professional. I switched my major and applied for the HIMS program at Ohio State by the end of December. As part of the requirements to apply, applicants had to attend a informational session led by Kristin Nelson, a Health Information professional for OSU’s Ackerman complex. During the informational session, Nelson encouraged students to send her their resume as many seniors in the program were leaving for the required internship to graduate. Seeing this as a perfect opportunity to make connections, I sent my resume shortly after applying. In less than a week, I had received a response from Nelson and less than hour afterwards, a response from my current manager, Ramon Durano at OSU University Hospital East. Having this opportunity gave me an edge over other applicants when it came to interviews. I was able to talk to my interviewer about those previously mentioned and how I want to continue my education by obtaining my MBA and eventually completing a doctorate program. Finally, I feel as if my hardwork and experiences that have shaped my career at Ohio State are paying off and coming into place.

Time and Change

When I first stepped onto the Ohio State University’s main campus, I rode the elevator in Morrill Tower all the way up to the 13th floor to meet my new family: the Dunn Scholar’s class of 2018. Walking in as a freshman, I was ecstatic to meet the group of people that I would grow up with and learn to navigate this university with. Growing up in a small town in NE, Ohio, I was almost in shock at the amount of students at this school and the size of the campus. However, the Dunn Scholars program provided me with a niche of students with similar interests to me from all different walks of life that helped make this huge university into something a little more manageable.

Growing up in the middle of no where, I had not experienced many different cultures or lifestyles different from my own. Coming to Ohio State was, in a lack of better terms, a bit of a culture shock. After spending some time with the Dunn Scholars and others on campus, I realized the importance of education on different cultures and how it can shape the way people believe. This was also during the 2016 election, which lead to multiple peer-lead discussions about the world around us and what we believed. Through these discussions, I was able to grow as a person and become more culturally sensitive to those around me. Finally, these discussions helped me change the thought patterns I once had and realize the close-mindedness of them.

Year in Review

When I first walked onto THE Ohio State University’s campus, I was completely shocked at the massive shoes I needed to fill. However, when I walked into my first meeting for the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars, I knew. I knew that this is where I belonged and that this is the place I would call home for at least the next four years. The Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars program has provided me with countless opportunities and a family to make this huge university feel small. In the first week of coming to campus, we received a pin for becoming a scholars student. This pin has helped me throughout the year remember why I came to THE Ohio State and the goals I hope to accomplish some day. Throughout this year, I have learned an infinite amount about myself due to the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholar program. I have learned what it means to be a DSWS member and the weight that name carries on this campus. I have also learned who I am as a person. What my goals in life are, what my values are, and what I want to accomplish before I leave this university. The DSWS program has pushed me to push myself to receive grades that are good enough to get into physical therapy school, as well as to push myself out of my comfort zone. Without this H&S pin, I do not know how my semester would have ended. I could not be more grateful.

Artifacts

Artifact: Honors and Scholars Pin

H&S. These two letters make up the simple little pin that sits on my desk that means so much to me. These two letters remind me of the achievements I have made, the achievements I am making, and the goals I will some day achieve. This pin reminds me of the importance of not only my academics, but also the importance of building a network of like minded individuals with similar values and goals while still remaining diverse and inclusive. Throughout the year, the H&S pin has reminded me to keep studying for the test and to earn the grade I want. Alos, it has reminded me of the place I belong and the mark I have on those around me. The Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars program has given me countless opportunities to grow as an individual and truly navigate myself through this new and exciting time in my life. Also, this pin reminds me of the goals I am achieving currently. The goals of ending the year strong and becoming more involved in the Columbus area. Every day, I am reminded of what I am fighting for and who I am fighting for. I’m fighting for the opportunity to make a difference in at least one person’s life. I am fighting for the opportunity to further my education through entering and completing physical therapy school. I am fighting for the numerous children I hope to one day impact with my education and through the volunteering I will continue to do.

About Me

Hello Y’all!

My name is Amanda England and I am a member of the Michael J. Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars. In high school I was an active member of the marching band and colorguard as well as the dance team at Buckeye High School. I was also involved in numerous clubs such as National Honors Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and Spanish club. At THE Ohio State University I began studying athletic training with hopes of going to graduate school for physical therapy. After my first semester, I learned that lecture style classrooms were not for me and that small, discussion based classes were my strong suite. I also learned that athletic training is not my passion and that I could no longer study it. I have since finished my second semester with my new major of pre-health information management and systems. This major is essentially anything in healthcare that is business oriented or does not result in direct patient care. I hope to use this major to go to graduate school and earn my Ph. D. in physical therapy. Finally, I plan to run my own physical therapy practice in the future that focuses on pediatric care.
