Concept Screening and Scoring

The goal of Concept screening and scoring is to take the four designs created by Team F and use decision matrices which use selection criteria to prioritize requirements and help choose a design. The first step in choosing 1-2 designs is to define the success criteria that will define each AEV.

Success Criteria

Size: Size is defined as an estimate of the overall surface are of the AEV. Size determines the amount of drag the AEV will have.

Weight: Weight is defined by the weight of the AEV. This is important because the amount of weight changes the amount of power it will cost to move the AEV.

Stability: Stability is defined as the amount of sway the AEV has on the track. The more stable the AEV is the less likely it will fall off the track.

Cost: The cost is defined by the total cost of all the parts used to make the AEV.

Design: Design is determined by the complexity of the design.

The table below is the concept screening matrix. This matrix is a less detailed way in scoring designs and models according to a certain criterion. As seen below, 4 designs were compared to a reference design, a plus means it performed better than the reference, 0 means it preformed the same, – means it preformed worse. Below it is shown design A and C were  chosen to be the best out of the 4.

A concept scoring matrix is a much more useful in determining the best option when it comes to design and models. Each criterion is given a weight percentage based on there importance. The design with the higher score is the best option based on the created criteria. As you can see below design A and C were chosen to be the best.
