Pictured above is Teufelsberg. This giant rubble hill was a remnant of World War II, yet today serves as an amazing green space and vantage point to scan the city.
Research has shown in many cases that quality of life in urban areas has a correlation to the amount of green space offered in the city. Berlin takes green space seriously. There are over 2,500 green spaces scattered throughout the city.
Below, find an outline of research supporting the Green Space agenda. Using the tabs within this section at the top, explore some of Berlin’s most famous green spaces.
Green space in cities has a greater effect on citizens lives than many may believe. Positive affects of green space for humans include increased activity, less pollution, and better temperature regulation. This impacts every single part of humans daily lives. For example, increased activity leads to better physical health as well as reduced stress and a happier mental state. Low pollution levels increase lung health. The benefits to getting outside and enjoying fresh green spaces are endless!
Unfortunately, even in Berlin, the affective amount of green space is not always met. In one study, 75% of the respondents had insufficient green space surrounding their homes for maximum positive impact on their lives. It is a fine line, however. Above a certain threshold green space may begin to decrease a citizens satisfaction with their life. This may be due to noise complaints or fear of crime in dark, tree-heavy areas. While those idea’s make sense, there is very little substantial evidence supporting them.
