The German Democratic Republic was the East portion of Germany under Soviet control. Despite the countries socialist label, the one party system was very controlling and resembled more of a dictatorship. Before the unification the controlled life of citizens in the East was very restricting, but despite the initial joy reunification brought, the East Germans lives were negatively affected after uniting as well. After dealing with all the negative ramifications of unification, citizens of the former East Germany began to miss their life in the East. They began unification with a negative view of the German Democratic Republic, but after reunifying looked back on the GDR with much nostalgia.
