History

Berlin is the current capital of Germany. It is a city with rich history and many different world events occurred here. The city was born in the 13th century. Before that it severed as a major trading center for Europe, due to its location on the Spree River, now the Mitte Borough. Since then the city has been growing. By 1400 the city had around 8500 inhabitants in the city. At this point the city was two separate cities Colln and Berlin.

On 18 January 1701, the elector Friedrich III crowned, himself, Friedrich I, King in Prussia. He lived in Berlin. Berlin was the capital of Prussia. Two years later he announced that five cites would become part of one city. They would be called Berlin. The total population of Berlin was 55000. Starting in 1740 Friedrich I declared that Berlin was a city of enlightenment, and was under constant construction. By the end of the century the city population was over 170000 people. The city was being rebuilt for the new hundred years.

In 1871, Berlin was declared the capital of Germany. By the year of 1877 the population was over a million. Until WWI Berlin experienced rapid growth in population and size, with over two million people.

From 1914-1918, WWI occurred and the city suffered greatly. food was scarce and thousands were killed. After the war was over the nation and city experienced corruptness. The country was torn over who was going to lead them.

In 1920, the military tried to stage a coupe to over take the country. The city remained in stress until WWII would occur due to many people trying to over take the country and lead it. The Great Depression also hit and caused massive bankruptcy in many businesses. Chaos was in the streets, many people were rioting.  Over a quarter of the population was unemployed in 1932.

In 1933, Adolf Hitler rose to power bringing the National Socialist party to power and ending the democracy. Hitler opens his first concentration camp in Berlin, Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Growing hate for the Jewish community was strong in the city. Berlin hosted the Summer Olympics in 1936. All anti-Semitic propaganda was taken down and hidden.

1938 was when the Jews of Germany were started to be placed in concentration camps. Millions would be killed over the length of the war.

In 1939, Germany declared war on Poland on September 1st. Germans over took Poland quickly. Over the period of war much of the city would be destroyed because of enemy bombing. War raged on until 1945 in Germany, Hitler refused to surrender his army. In 1945, the war would come to an end in Germany. The Red Army crossed the boarder into Berlin on April 21, starting the Battle for Berlin. Hitler would commit suicide on April 30. Germany would surrender on May 2nd. Ending WWII in Europe.

Following the War Germany was split into an East and West Germany. Berlin was split in to and was a crucial place for the Cold War. Tensions were in the rise over Berlin. The city would be demolished in East Berlin by the Soviets. Berlin remains a corrupt city in the end.

In 1961, the Berlin Wall goes up. Splitting East and West Berlin. The Wall will remain up until 1989, when it was torn down by the people. The city had been reunified once again.

The city would start its rebuilding process after the fall, causing a new and modern Berlin to come out.
