Venturing out of the city

The 12 of us that did not go to Sachsenhausen on the first day in Berlin ventured out of the city to visit the concentration camp today. The experience was very heavy, moving and impactful for the whole group.

It is easy to listen to statistics and stories from a textbook in a classroom, but it does absolutely nothing compared to when you actually visit and picture what had happened right where you are standing. There is no emotional impact until you walk through the entrance gate and see it for yourself.

Gate at Sachsenhausen

I purposely limited myself to taking a very select amount of pictures at only from the entrance gate after I toured the camp because pictures cannot communicate the emotion of standing there yourself. It is an experience that I did not want to have solely from behind the lens of a camera. I felt like I had no need to take an extensive amounts of pictures to remember something that I will never forget.
