Mentor Expectations

Organization Logistics

  • Attend and engage in weekly meetings.
    • Attendance is strongly considered in exec board candidacy and appointments.
    • If you are unable to attend a meeting, please let an exec board member know as soon as possible so that you may receive an excused absence.
    • Mentors who reach 3 unexcused absences will be required to meet with members of the exec board to discuss their attendance and future participation in the organization.
  • Review lessons before mentoring sessions and preferably before weekly meetings as well.
  • Attend all mentoring sessions and establish a consistent driving routine with fellow mentors in your group.
  • Check in with fellow mentors the night before each mentoring session and reach out to the main GroupMe for an alternative driver if needed.
    • If available, offer rides to other groups who need them.
    • Groups may use Uber/Lyft to get to the high school if no driver is available, but this option should only be utilized when necessary.
  • Reach out to fellow mentors in your group as soon as possible if you know you will be absent from a mentoring session.
  • Actively engage with mentees and avoid using personal technology (especially cell phones) in the classroom.
  • Support organization fundraising efforts and social events.
  • Support efforts to organize and execute mentee field trips.
  • Support recruitment efforts by promoting Empower Mentoring within any other groups you are involved in at OSU.
  • Offer feedback to exec board members from personal experience and mentee commentary, and never hesitate to ask questions.
  • Let an exec board member know if there is anything they can do to support you in or outside of Empower Mentoring.

Social-Emotional Mentoring

  • Advocate for students.
  • Connect students with opportunities.
  • Help mentees think, learn, grow, and foster their potential.
  • Support mentees in the development of their high school and post high-school endeavors.
  • Respect and uplift mentees’ lifestyles, and communicate in a way that is accessible.
  • Be a role model, and set an example for healthy social, professional, and personal habits.
